Early Life:
Theodore Robert Bundy Born Theodore Robert Cowell was born on November 24, 1946 to Eleanor Louise Cowell (known as Louise). He was born out of wedlock at the Elizabeth Lund Home for Unwed Mothers in Burlington Vermont, where he remained 2 months after his birth. His mother Louise had considered putting Bundy up for adoption, however his father Sam Cowell insisted that Bundy join the family in Philadelphia.
Bundy grew up believing that his grandparents were his parents and his mother was his sister. However in the Stranger Beside Me written by Anne Rule said Bundy had always known who his real mother was. He reported that ‘she was always motherly and I did not believe a sister could be 20 years older than a brother.’ He described his childhood as uneventful despite popular belief. It was said that his grandmother suffered from Depression and agoraphobia and his grandfather to be described to have a temper.
Some Bundy theorists believe that Bundy was the result of his grandfather raping his daughter Louise, even though she said she was seduced by an abandoned war veteran. He insisted having a close relationship with his grandfather, but it is suspected that he may have experienced physical and/or psychological abuse from his grandfather.
Bundy’s Aunt had described disturbing behavior that she had experienced one time while staying at the house. She had told an interview with Vanity Fair that she had woken up to toddler Bundy placing knives near her sleeping body and that she appeared to be the only one who thought that to be of concern. In the same Vanity Fair article Dr. Dorothy Lewis, a psychiatrist, had said that this action can occur in children who have experienced or witnessed serious trauma and abuse.
At the age of 3 Louise took Bundy from his home and Philadelphia and moved him to Tacoma, Washington. She changed Bundy’s last name (then Cowell) to Nelson before the move to not draw attention to his illegitimacy. While in Washington, Louise became involved and eventually married Johnnie Bundy, to Ted Bundy’s despair he would act out and have tantrums. This did not stop Louise’s new husband from adopting Ted and giving him the notorious last name Bundy. In his last interview the night before his execution with Jame Dobson he admitted to the use of poronography which he believes was a cause to the killings that he would later perform in life.
The First Victim(s):
Despite Bundy confirming his first murder to be Lynda Ann Healy in 1974 there is spectulation that the killings begam as early as 14. One possible victim was Ann Maire Burr who was 8 when she disappeared from her home in Tacoma Washington in the middle of the night on August 31, 1961 Bundy who was 14 at the time of the disappearance lived only a few miles away. The evidence that was left did not contain enough DNA to be compared to Bundy’s own DNA to make a match. She is still considered missing 58 years, 8 months and 8 days later.
Before the kidnapping and killing of Lynda Ann Healy, his first confirmed crime against a person was 18 year old Karen Sparks. In January of 1974, Bundy had broken into her apartment, bludgeoned and assaulted her. She survived by remains with serious psychological and physical injuries.
February of the same year was when Bundy had kidnapped and killed Lynda Ann Healy age 21 who was a student at the University of Washington. Healy was known for being up by 5:30 am as she worked at Northwest Ski Reports as a weather reporter, so on February 1 of 1974, when her alarm had gone off and her roommate found her room empty, it was assumed that was where she was.
It was not until Healy’s employer called to say that she did not show up for work that they realized that something was off. Later that day the roommates waited until Healy’s family showed up for dinner that they would share their worry and Healy’s mother called the Seattle Police Department.
When Lieutenant Pat Murphy went to investigate Healy’s room it was found to be neat and the bed to be made. This action was odd to her roommates as Healy never made her bed on the days she worked, reaching back the bedspread it was found that the sheets and pillow had been covered in blood and a nightgown was found in the closet covered in blood as well.
The Killings:
The first confirmed killings began in 1974 and his last known victims were in 1978. Bundy confessed to 30 murders the night before his execution in 1989, but more victims of Bundy’s horrific crimes are suspected. The identified victims were Karen Sparks (1974-survived), Lynda Ann Healy (1974), Donna Manson (1974), Susane Rancourt (1974), Roberta Parks (1974), Brenda Ball (1974), Georgann Hawkins (1974), Janice Ott (1974), Denise Naslund (1974), Nancy Wilcox (1974), Melissa Smith (1974), Laura Ann Aime (1974), Carol DaRonch (1974-survived the attempted abduction), Debra Kent (1974), Caryn Campbell (1975), Julie Cunningham (1975), Denise Oliverson (1975), Lynette Culver (1975), Susan Curtis (1975), Margaret Bowman (1978), Lisa Levy (1978), Karen Chandler (1978-survived), Kathy Kleiner (1978-survived), Cheryl Thomas (1978-survived) and Kimberly Leach (1978). Out of Bundy’s confessed victims only 20 could be identified, 10 still remain unidentified to this day.
Many of Bundy’s victims had experienced sexual assault and Bundy had admitted that he would often revisit the grave sites of his victims to have sex with their dead bodies. Bundy said that he would often have sex with the corpse until their bodies had been eaten by animals or were too decomposed. Many of his victims’ bodys never were recovered or had been bones by the time the body was found. Bundy also admitted that he often took pictures of the corpses and had kept some of the decapitated heads as souvenirs.
Although Bundy never confirmed it had been noted by many reporters that a majority of Bundy’s victims looked like his college ex-girlfriend who had dumped him. It has been suggested that this is how he had decided on his victims.
To lure his victims, Bundy often approached them in public places pretending to either be injured or disabled and sometimes impersonating an authority figure to come across less threatening. He was described as charming, and would often use that charm as a weapon to appear vulnerable as well. Bundy would then proceed to knock them unoconsious and take them to a hidden area where he would then rape and murder them. Sometimes Bundy would rape his victims in between strangling them while they had been half dead and often would have sex with the corpses after they were deceased.
Girlfriend(s):
Bundy had dated Elizabeth Kendall (aka Elizabeth Kloepfer) from the time the killing started to his capture. They met in 1969 on Kendall’s first night out after moving to Seattle with her daughter Molly because of a failed marriage and a desire to start a new life. Kendall at one point had called to tip the Seattle Police Department after releasing information about a suspect that sounded a lot like Bundy. The police did not take Bundy as a serious consideration for the suspect they were looking for and Kendall stayed in the relationship with him.
The relationship began in 1969 and Bundy was described to be a father-figure to young Molly teaching her to ride bikes. He had fit perfectly into their family. In the new Amazon prime original series Falling for a Killer, not all was as perfect as it seemed, Molly (whose real name is Tina) had recalled some incidents that occurred with Bundy that were extremely inappropriate.
At the age of 7 Molly recalled playing hide-and-seek with Bundy who was hiding beneath an afgan in the house. Molly recalled as she lifted it up, Bundy was naked. She recalled Bundy making up a story about how he wanted to be invisible but could not be invisible with his close on.
Another time Molly recalled Bundy climbing into bed with her and after a while she yelled to him ‘You peed’, not realizing what actually happened. Molly reported never telling her mother until years later because she loved him and did not want to see him leave. She also did not want to see her mother unhappy and wrote in her mother’s revised memoir The Phantom Prince: My Life with Ted Bundy “We loved Ted…He had been such a positive figure in our lives, such a help to (us), I did not want him to get in trouble….I did no want him to go away.”
Bundy was famously known for marrying Carole Ann Boone as she took the stand during his trial. She had testified on Bundy’s behalf for both trials and as a character witness on his behalf. As he was questioning her, he asked her to marry which she said yes. At the time Florida was a state that allowed marriage declaration in court, with the presence of a judge to be considered a legal marriage. Boone and Bundy had met years back and she was a Washington state DES worker, up until his execution Boone always believed Bundy’s innocents, the two shared a daughter together who was born in October of 1981.
Captured and Charged:
Bundy had been captured and charged twice, the first time being August of 1975. Bundy had been pulled over by police for a driving violation. When the police searched the infamous Volkswagen they found handcuffs, an ice pick, crowbar, pantyhose with eye holes cut out and other items that raised suspicion. He was arrested due to the suspicion of burglary and soon the authorities had felt confident that he had been responsible for the tri-state murder spree. Bundy went on trial for attempted kidnapping of Carol DaRonch in February of 1976 and was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
During this time evidence had been found that linked Bundy to the murder of Caryn Campbell and proceeded to charge him with first degree murder, transferring him from Utah to Aspen Colorado for trial. Bundy had decided to represent himself which granted him access to use the law library that was located on the second floor of the Pitkin County Courthouse. The judge had granted Bundy the ability to use the library without the need of shackles or handcuffs.
On June 7, 1977 Bundy took the opportunity after a guard went on a smoke break and jumped from the second story and made a run for it, without any plan in place. It was 10 minutes before anyone knew Bundy had escaped. Bundy was caught and put back in custody 7 days later.
Bundy tested his luck at escaping a second time while he was in the Garfield County Jail in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The cell grate was not secure and there was a light fixture in the ceiling that was not welded in. Bundy took this opportunity to lose weight and plan for another escape while in Jail. Bundy had carved an opening into the ceiling where the light fixture was wider so that he could fit through and arranged his bed with law books to look as though he was sleeping.
On December 30, 1977 Bundy crawled through the fixture climbed into a jailer’s apartment, put on civilian clothes and escaped once again. This time escaping to Florida in which he killed his final (known) victims Margaret Bowman, Lisa Leavy and 12 year old Kimberly Leach. It was in 1978 that Bundy would be arrested for the final time.
Death:
In July of 1979, Bundy was found guilty of first degree murder for killing Bowman and Leavy, three counts of attempted murder in the first degree and had been sentenced to the electric chair. Bundy remained on death row for 10 years after the conviction and during this time eventually ran out of appeals.
On the night before his execution Bundy confessed in an interview with James Dobson to the horrific crimes he committed. Bundy had asked to meet with Dobson because he believed that Dobson would spread the message he was trying to condone better than the media would. Bundy brought into play how pornography was a big part of his crimes and how his sexual compulsions and fantaises started with it. Bundy had mentioned that alcohol was often used to reduce these compulsions and inhibitions, but in the end his crimes were often committed with him being half drunk. He had admitted in the interview that after committing his first murder ‘it was like coming out of some horrible trans or dream-to have been possed by something so awful and alien…wake up and remmeber what happened and you are responsible….absolutely horrified I was capable of doing that.” While Bundy placed the blame on pornography he did take responsibility for the pain and suffering he had placed on those affected by his crimes. He had also admitted in the interview that “when I would kill, after the remorse and horror was there, but the feeling to do it again would come back stronger.”
Bundy that same night called his mother twice and refused to pick a last meal. He was given what the standard last meal-steak, eggs, hash browns and toast; Bundy did not eat any of it. The day of his execution there had been 42 witnesses who came to Florida State Prison to watch Bundy die by electrocution. Bundy’s last words before he died where “I’d like to give my love to my family and friends”
Dx:
Bundy had been diagnosed multiple times due to having multiple psychiatrist examinations to try and understand what was going on inside this killers’ mind. He had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, multiple personality disorder (now known as dissociative identity disorder), antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. All of these diagnoses may be true as a licensed social worker and with the help of my DSM-5; I would like to bring in another diagnosis that could have played apart in Bundy’s crime.
Bundy does display multiple symptoms of Antisocial Personality disorder in regards to his deceitfulness, repeated lying (think about all of the stories he was telling to everyone), impulsivity and failure to plan ahead (think about the first escape), Obviously showing disregard for others safety and he was above the age of 18. Bundy does meet the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder especially adding in that charm and ability to lead somewhat of a normal life. However, the diagnosis I would also like to bring to the table could explain another reason for his “need” to kill; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Obsessive Compulsive disorder is defined as recurrent and persistent intrusive thoughts and the need to act on them to experience relief. Bundy in his last interview had explained that he did experience remorse and horror for the crimes committed, which someone with antisocial personality disorder is not likely to do. Bundy also described (after going on a tangent) having the “brutal urge to do that kind of thing, once it had been more/less satisfied…I became myself again.” The ‘brutal urge’ could identify as the ‘recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced’ better known as the ‘Obsessions’ and the ‘having it satisfied’ or the killings could identify as the ‘Compulsions’. Obsessions and Compulsions are often very time consuming and cause significant distress in a persons’ life. Bundy was able to live a ‘normal life’, but once that urge came to be strong, he felt the need to act on it to have some kind of relief. Bundy also identified that he would use alcohol to suppress these “needs” of his. Alcohol and OCD often go hand in hand with each other, which would be another identifying mark as to Bundy having Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. In no way does this diagnosis excuse Bundy’s crimes or those he has hurt, but it could be something to look into and understand as to why a killer becomes a killer.
