Delphine LaLaurie and her Torture Chamber for Slaves

Name: Marie Delphine LaLaurie

Born: March 19, 1787

Died: December 7, 1849, Paris France

Nationality: American

Victims: Unknown/ Several

Early Life:

Marie Delphine Macarty aka Delphine LaLaurie born (approximately) March 19 1787 in New Orleans, Louisiana. LaLaurie was one of 5 children and born to parents who were famous in the town’s European Creole community. She had family members who were a part of the government in Louisiana, one being her uncle through Marriage Esteban Rodriquez Miro. Miro had been the governor between 1785-1791 of the Spanish American regions in both Louisiana and Florida. Her cousin Augustin de Macarty was New Orleans Mayor from 1815-1820.

The Haitian Revolution had occurred when LaLaurie was 4 years old in 1791, which had caused fear that slaves would rebel and resist against their slaveholders. Before the revolution, LaLaurie’s uncle had been murdered by his slaves in 1771. This action was an inspiration for the multiple conspiracies and uprising to come in later years, including the MIna Conspiracy in 1791, the Pointe Coupee Conspiracy in 1794, and the German Coast uprising in 1811. These events had led the slaveholders to discipline their slaves worse because of the fear of rebellion against their slaves.

Marriages:

LaLaurie has married three times in her life, the first being on June 11, 1800, making LaLaurie 13 years old at the time. LaLaurie was married the first time to a high ranking Spanish Royal officer by the name of Don Ramon y Angulo, a Caballero de la Royal de Carlos. The marriage did not last long because in 1804 after the American Acquisition, Don Ramon was requested to appear at the court of Spain after being appointed consul general for Spain in the Territory of Orleans. On his way to Madrid, he died suddenly leaving a pregnant LaLaurie alone. LaLaurie gave birth a few days after his death to a daughter named Maire Borja/Borgia Delphine López y Angulo de la Candelaria aka Borquita. Due to the death of Don Ramon, both LaLaurie and her newborn daughter returned to New Orleans to live.

In 1808, LaLaurie married again to Jean Blanque, who was an important banker, merchant, lawyer, and legislator. They purchased their house on 409 Royal St in New Orleans which later became known as Villa Blanque. Together Blaque and LaLauire had 4 children together named, Marie Louise Pauline, Louise Maire Laure, Marie Louise Jeanne, and Jean Pierre Paulin Blanque. Blanque died in 1816.

LaLaurie married her third husband, a physician Leonard Louis Nicolas LaLaurie in 1825, he was much younger than her. LaLaurie bought property on 1140 Royal St in her own name in the year 1831 and by 1832 had a 2 story mansion built that included slave quarters. She proceeded to live in this mansion with her third husband and 2 of her daughters. By November 16, 1832, she petitioned to be separated from her husband, claiming that he ‘treated her in such a manner as to render their living unsupportable.”

1833:

In 1833, it is reported that LaLaurie tried to cover up the death of a young enslaved girl that she whipped until the girl fell off the roof of her house. The police had found the young girl’s body hidden in a well and decided to find LaLaurie and force her to sell the other slaves that were living on her estate.

The Fire and Torture Chamber:

A fire had started at the LaLaurie’s Royal Street home on April 10, 1834, that started in the kitchen. When the police and fire marshals had arrived at the LaLaurie residence they found a 70-year-old woman who was the cook chained by the ankle to a stove. The cook had admitted to setting the fire to escape the torture chamber that LaLaurie had. It was also said that the cook was trying to commit suicide to avoid being sent to the chamber. The cook had stated that if ‘a slave was taken to the uppermost room, they never came back.” The cook then leads the police and fire marshals to the attic where they found seven slaves imprisoned by spiked iron collars.

Bystanders who had forced their way into the LaLaurie’s slave quarters to rescue them after LaLaurie was said to refuse to give the key explained they had found slaves who had experienced severe and long term torture. A black woman who had torn limbs, scars, deep wounds and had been severely mutilated, a man who showed to be a part of a sex change, a woman who was trapped in a small age with her limbs broken and placed in a way that had her look like a crab and a woman who had her arms and legs removed and had patches of flesh cut off in a way that caused her to look like a caterpillar. Among the other victims, many had been dead due to starvation and torture, had their mouths sewn shut, or had their body parts sewn to different areas, somewhere hung by their necks and signs of being whipped. Those that were alive had pleaded with those that found them to kill them to end their suffering.

Aftermath:

After the discovery of the abused slaves, the bystanders had gone back to LaLaurie’s house and wrecked it. By the time the sheriff had arrived, the house was so badly destroyed that the only part of the hose left was the walls. The abused slaves had been taken to jail and shown to the public as a learning experience about the abuse. For weeks after the fire and destruction by the bystanders, a sweep of the estate was conducted, which included diffing the yard. In the yard, it was said that sets of human remains were found, including a child’s.

LaLaurie and her husband left New Orleans quickly during the destruction of their mansion. After traveling on foot, carriage, and by boat they landed in Paris France. After she fled it was unknown if she lived in poverty or wealth for the remainder of her life, what she did the rest of her life remained a mystery. It was in the 1930s in St. Louis Cemetery that a copper plate was found belonging to LaLaurie indicating her death being on December 7, 1842. However, in the French Archives in Paris, it was later discovered that LaLaurie died on December 7, 1849.

The Mansion and American Horror Story:

LaLaurie’s mansion had remained in ruins for a few years after the destruction from the bystanders. The mansion became a reminder of the horrific crimes that were committed by the family that once lived there. The house was eventually bought by Pierre Trastour, who rebuilt the house and left it with the look it has today.

The house had been made into numerous uses over the years including a public high school, a bar, apartment building, furniture store are just to name a few. However, the history that haunted the house remained no matter how many times the house was turned into something else. In 2007 actor Nicolas Cage bought the house for $3.45 million and two years later auctioned it off for $2.3 Million.

In American Horror Story’s third season Coven, Kathy Bates played Delphine LaLauire in a loosely based role of LaLaurie and her story.
