Robert Hansen the Butcher Baker

Name: Robert Christian Hansen

AKA: Butcher Baker

Born: February 15, 1939, Estherville, Iowa

Died: August 21, 2014, Anchorage,  Alaska

Nationality: American

Victims: 17-21+

Early Life:

Robert Christian Hansen was born on February 15, 1939, to a Danish immigrant and just like his father, Hansen became a baker. Hansen in his youth was skinny, shy, and had a stutter. At school, he was made fun of and was described as a loner.

He grew up hating the girls in school because he would be rejected by them. He was reported to have grown up having fantasies of revenge towards the girls who had hurt him during his childhood and adolescence.

Army/Arrests:

In 1957, 18-year-old Hansen entered the US army reserve with dreams of leaving behind his past troubles and making something of himself. After being in the army for a year he achieved his goal by becoming an assistant drill instructor in Pochahontas, Iowa. Hansen married a young woman he had met while living there.

These achievements were not enough for Hansen because he continued to feel mistreated by others and his fantasies about revenge soon became reality. In 1960, 21-year-old Hansen had convinced a young employee at a bakery to aid him in burning down a school bus garage.

However, the young boy eventually admitted to what had occurred and Hansen was arrested and his wife soon divorced him. Hansen spent 20 months incarcerated for his 3-year sentence for arson. After his release, he had been arrested a few more times for theft and remarried another woman in the area.

In 1967, Hansen moved with his wife to Anchorage Alaska, had two children, and opened up a small bakery. Hansen was ready to settle into a quiet life and was described as being ‘well-liked’ into the community he moved in too.

The “Butcher Baker”:

Hansen had been recognized in the community for his skill with bowhunting and was well respected. However, the community had no idea about his other hobby or the trophies he would obtain from this hidden talent.

He often targeted sex workers and exotic dancers from the area of Anchorage and transport them to his cabin in the remote Alaskan Bush. If the victims cooperated with him and did not put up a fight he would rape them and threaten them to keep them quiet but would bring them back to town.

Those who put up a fight suffered horrific consequences. He would take these women out to Knik River, which was Hansen’s favorite location, and set them free. Setting them free did not mean that they were free; it meant that they would run for their lives as Hansen would track them down and hunt them like animals.

Hansen was armed with a hunting knife and a .223 caliber Ruger mini rifle hunting these women like prey. He would chase them for hours or sometimes days as a form of torture until he had found them and shot them dead.

Cindy Paulson:

June 13, 1983; 17-year-old Cindy Paulson had escaped from Hansen as he was stuffing her into the Piper Super Cub airplane he owned. She had stated Hansen would pay her $200 for oral sex, but instead had pointed his gun at her and drove to his house in Muldoon.

She was raped and tortured by Hansen being left chained in the basement by her neck. She reported that Hansen had taken a nap on the couch near her and when he woke he took her to the airport. She was going to his cabin in the Knik River area that was only accessible by plane or boat.

Paulson found the chance to escape when Hansen’s back was turned because he was loading the cockpit.

Despite his legal history, Hansen presented with a timid manner, he was a well-known baker and had a strong alibi. These factors kept Hansen from being a ‘serious suspect’ and Paulson’s case had gone cold.

Investigation:

It was not until Detective Glenn Flothe with the Alaska State Troopers started to investigate many bodies that had been found in the Anchorage, Seward, and Matanuska-Susitna Valley area that Hansen became a viable suspect.

Detective Flothe had contacted the FBI and requested a criminal psychological profile based on the three bodies the State Troopers had found. Special Agent Douglas profiled the killer to have low self-esteem, but be an experienced hunter, have been rejected by women in the past and find the need to keep ‘souvenirs’ of his murders. Special Agent Douglas also believed the murderer may have a stutter.

Hansen had fit the profile that Special Agent Douglas had given, had his own plane and the testimony given by Cindy Paulson further supported Hansen to be the killer.

The “Known” Victims:

His huntings occurred between 1971-1983 when he was eventually caught, tried, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During this time he had between 17-21+, some of the bodies were not found until after Hansen’s arrest.

His known victims included Megan Emerick (Body Found: N/A), Mary Thill (Body Found: N/A), Horseshoe Harriet (Body Found: 4/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Eklutna Annie (Body Found: 7/21/1980), Roxanne Eastland (Body Found: N/A), Joanna Messina (Body Found: 7/1980), Lisa Futrell (Body Found: 5/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Sherry Morrow (Body Found: 9/12/1982), Andrea “Fish” Altiery (Body Found: N/A), Sue Luna (Body Found: 4/24/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Paula Goulding (Body Found: 9/2/1983), Cindy Paulson (survived), Malai Larsen (Body Found: 4/24/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Delynn “Sugar” Frey (Body Found: 8/20/1985), Teresa Watson (Body Found” 4/26/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Angela Feddern (Body Found: 4/26/1984-after Hansen’s arrest), Tamera “Tami” Pederson (Body Found: 4/29/1984-after Hansen’s arrest) and Ceilia “Beth” Van Zanten (Body Found: N/A).

Hansen raped and assaulted over 30 women in Alaska and murdered at least 17 women. The age range for the women was between 17-41. Hansen was a major factor the finding the bodies of some of his victims. Many of the victims he denied killing were only suspected of.

Hansen had been arrested in 1972 for assault and entered a work release program after 6 months in prison. He pleaded guilty in 1976 to larceny after he stole a chainsaw from a department store and was sentenced to five years in prison. He was also to receive treatment for his bipolar disorder diagnosis during his time in prison. However, the Supreme Court reduced his sentence and gave him time served.

Trial, Prison, and Death:

Hansen was charged with assault, kidnapping, weapons offenses, theft, and insurance fraud. He received the insurance fraud charge after he filed a claim with the insurance company for the “theft” of a few of his souvenirs. He later claimed he found the trophies in his backyard and forgot to inform the insurance company.

Hansen entered a plea bargain after a match between the bullets found at the crime scenes and Hansen’s rifle. He pleaded guilty to 4 murders (Morrow, Messina, Goulding, and Eklutna Annie) and gave details about the other victims so he could serve his sentence in federal prison and have no press.

Hansen also confirmed the theory the police had about how the women had been abducted. He also said that if his victims could convince him that they would not go to the police he would let them go. He stated that he had begun the killings in the early 1970s.

The jury sentenced Hansen to 461 years plus life in prison without the possibility of parole. He died from natural causes and health conditions on August 21, 2014, at age 75 in Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage.
