Early Life:
Ricardo “Richard” Leyva Muñoz Ramírez was a Mexican American serial killer, burglar, and rapist. Through terrorizing the state of California, he obtained the name of “The Night Stalker.” He murdered at least 14 people, but tortured and raped more.
In his earlier years, he was heavily influenced by his cousin Mike Ramirez who was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran. Mike would boast to Richard about how he would torture, rape, and kill Vietnamese women. He had a big hatred for women, and even showed Richard a picture of himself posing with a woman’s decapitated head. Mike’s hatred for women was so immense that he shot his wife while 13 year old Richard was present. Mike was deemed insane, and admitted into the Texas State Mental Hospital after the incident.
Richard Ramirez’s mother worked at a shoe factory, which exposed her to chemical fumes while she was pregnant with him. All of his other siblings had birth defects including respiratory issues to physical deformities. As a young boy he also had two severe head injuries. One of the incidents was from trying to climb a dresser which fell on top of him. The incident caused an injury that required him to get thirty stitches. Later on, Ramirez began to experience epilepsy and had several seizures.
Before dropping out of high school, Richard Ramirez took a job at the Holiday Inn where his voyeurism would further develop. On one occasion, Ramirez snuck into a couple’s room, and attempted to rape a woman while her husband was not around. Her partner beat Ramirez horribly, and his position at the hotel was terminated.
Richard Ramirez at an early age turned to drugs such as LSD, and got into Satanism. His devotion to Satanism would help investigators pin him to the crimes. Satanic symbols and evidence of Satanic rituals would be left in the areas around the attacks.
Ramirez relocated from Texas to California at the age of 22 where he would live for the remainder of his life.
Night Stalker:
He lived mostly in the Los Angeles area, and robbed people to afford his drug addiction. His first known murder was a 9 year old girl, Mei Leung. The girl’s body was found in the basement of a hotel in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco. His DNA was found on the body later on through testing which connected him to the murder.
His murders escalated in 1984 when he stabbed sleeping 79 year old Jennie Vincow in Glassell Park, Los Angeles. He had brutally sexually assaulted her, stabbed her, and slashed her throat in her own apartment. He cut her throat so deeply that her head was almost decapitated. After this, he began to burglar, rape, and murder people mostly in their own homes over the course of two years all over California.
In 1985, Ramirez attempted to murder Maria Hernandez. He shot her outside of her home, then entered her house. After Maria managed to escape, Ramirez murdered her roommate, Dayle Okazaki. That same night he also pulled Tsai-Lian Yu out of her car and shot her several times before fleeing. Having two attacks in the same day scared the public, and grabbed the media’s attention. Ramirez was described in the media as a curly haired attacker with rotting teeth. He also received the names of the “Walk-In Killer” and the “Valley Intruder”.
Days later, he burgled and murdered Vincent Zazzara, then his wife Maxine. Ramirez mutilated Maxine’s body with multiple stab wounds, a T carving on her breast, and her eyes were even gouged out. These mutilations were discovered to have happened post-mortem. The only evidence the police had were footprints in the garden, and bullets similar to a previous attack. Vincent and Maxine Zazzara were initially discovered by their son, Peter.
He would usually practice Satanic rituals, or leave behind Satanic symbols with each of his murders. Victims that have made it out alive say that Ramirez would preach about and declare his love and devotion to Satanism.
By this time, he was mentioned all over the media and police were attempting to track him down. Ramirez continued to burglar, rape, and murder many others. He did not have a specific type of person he was after. He attacked both men and women of various ages and social classes. Many classify him as a “thrill seeker” with his kills, and would murder whoever’s house he decided to target.
On one occasion, Ramirez attacked 83 year old Malvial Keller and her 80 year old disabled sister Blanche. He beat them both with a hammer and drew pentagrams on Malvail’s thigh and on her wall. Blanch had survived the attack.
During the summer, he burgled Chitat and Sakima Assawahem. He beat shot and killed Chitat, and forced Sakima to perform oral sex before he fled. That same day he murdered and mutilated a married couple, Maxson and Lela Kneilding.
In the beginning of August, Ramirez attacked the couple Ahmed Zia and his wife Suu Kyi while in their home. He murdered Ahmed by shooting him. After that he sodomized and forced Suu Ki to perform oral sex on him.
Because the news revolving around him blew up, Ramirez relocated from the LA area to San Francisco. In San Francisco he burgled a 66 year old man, and performed his usual pattern with couples of shooting the man and beating his wife. He shot the wife in the head and left her to die. He then obtained the new title of “Night Stalker,” because of how he’d usually murder his victims.
Late August of 1985, on one of his final days of crime, he broke into the apartment of Bill Carns and Inez Erickson. He shot and murdered Carns, then raped Erickson. He forced her to pledge to Satan, then made her perform oral sex on him. Although she was left tied up and beaten, Erickson survived the attack, and took note of Ramirez’s car license plate. She gave a detailed description of his appearance to the authorities.
Quickly after Erickson gave his description, his mugshots were all over the news. The following day, Ramirez was captured when one of the locals recognized him on the street trying to steal a car. His picture had been posted all over and on the covers of local newspapers. Crowds of locals gathered together to take him down as a mob. The mob severely beat Ramirez. One of the individuals bashed him in the head with a metal bar. The mob only ceased when the police broke it up to prevent them from killing him.
Captured and charged:
Ramirez did everything he could to hinder the trial. To speed up the process, some of the charges against Ramirez were dropped. He was charged with 14 murders, multiple attempted murders, and many other felonies including burglary and sexual assault. During the penalty phase in 1989, he was sentenced to death by the gas chamber in California.
This trial was one of the longest criminal trials in American history, and more than 100 witnesses were testified. There was an interruption in the trial when Phyllis Singletary, one of the jurors, did not arrive. It was later found out that she had been shot, and the jury was scared that even though Ramirez was locked up, he might’ve directed someone on the outside to kill her. That was not the case though, Ramirez had nothing to do with her murder.
He obtained a cult following by the time of the trial who mostly claimed to be Satanists. Some of them would write him letters and pay him visits. Magazine editor Doreen Lioy became obsessed with him, and wrote to him about 75 times. He later married her while he was in prison. Lioy had also said that once he is put to death she will kill herself.
After the death sentences had been given Richard Ramirez said, “Big deal death always went with the territory. See you in Disneyland.” The trial cost 1.8 million dollars making it one of the most expensive cases in the history of California.
