Early Life:
Kenneth Erskine is one of Britain’s most notorious serial killers, who was commonly known as the “Stockwell Strangler”. He was born in Hammersmith, a district of London. His mother Margaret was British, and his father Chalrles, Antiguan. Erskine was the oldest of four boys, who never had a stable childhood. Margaret and Charles Erskine divorced when Kenneth was about 12 years old. The Erskine boys would spend most of their days in and out of foster homes.
Prior to his parents divorce, his neighbors and acquaintances knew Kenneth for being a happy and cheerful boy who often read the Bible. The divorce was said to have affected Kenneth’s behavior greatly. He became unruly, violent, and a bully to those weaker and smaller than him. He would attack smaller kids and sometimes tie them up. He went to several schools for children with behavioral issues, and would attack the teachers and other staff.
On one occasion, he stabbed a teacher with a pair of scissors, and took a psychiatric nurse hostage by holding the scissors to their throat. Another time, he also set fire to his school which caused the building remarkable damage. He also tried to drown a couple other students in a swimming pool, but was stopped when the staff got to him.
His teachers tried several methods in order to get to him including showing him kindness and trying to understand him. But when he noticed their affection and understanding, he’d try his best to freak them out. He would do things such as grinding on them, exposing himself to them, and masturbating in front of them. He was extremely difficult to deal with.
Once it was reported that he attempted to hang one of his younger brothers. When he tried to give one of his brothers marijuana, his parents were pushed to the edge. His family abandoned him at the age of 16, because he was too much to handle.
The Crime Begins:
When his family kicked him out he became a drifter, and traveled through various places mostly within the Stockwell areas as a squatter. Erskine would burglar homes, rob people, and commit other lesser scaled crimes to get by. He also started to abuse drugs and alcohol.
He would often commit these small burglaries, and sold some of the items he stole. He would use the money to get food and drugs, and he had enough money to open ten bank accounts. Although he would regularly commit crimes, he was caught by the police several times.
During his times in prison he would often draw and paint. Most of his drawings were of old people dying in very terrible and explicit ways. There were pictures of old people burned to death, gagged, with their heads decapitated, and others.
The Stockwell Strangler:
Between April and July of 1986, Kenneth Erskine murdered at least seven elderly people in London. He usually broke into their homes, sexually assaulted them, and strangled them.
His first victim was Nancy Emms, a 78 year old woman from Wandsworth. When a doctor checked out the body, he initially claimed her death to be caused by natural causes. She was found tucked in her bed as though she passed away in her sleep. This was even marked on her death certificate. Not until after someone noticed her TV was missing, people thought she might’ve been murdered. It was discovered postmortem that Nancy Emms was actually raped and strangled. Her body had cracked ribs, severe bruising, and finger marks around her throat. There were also traces of semen found on her body.
Janet Cockett, 67, was his second victim. She was murdered in June of 1986 from strangulation. The murder took place within her flat on the Wandsworth housing estate. She was the chairman for the tenants association of the building. Her death was also thought to be from natural causes at first like how they saw Emms. Although she was not sexually assaulted, it was also determined postmortem that she was murdered. Like Emms, Cockett was found laying in bed tucked in her sheets as though she passed in her sleep. But underneath the sheets, Cockett was naked. Her nightgown which was laying on a chair by her bed also had tears in it. Erskine’s palm print was later found on a window at Cockett’s flat.
His third and fourth murders were committed the same month as Cockett. Both victims were Polish men living in a residential home in Stockwell. One of them was a WWII veteran. Valentine Gleim, 84, and Zbigniew Strabawa, 94, were both sexually assaulted and strangled.
After those two men was William Carmen, 84. Erskine stole money from the man’s home before he molested him and strangled him in July of 1986. Carmen lived alone, and was found dead the morning after the murder.
Erskine’s sixth victim was later in July where 74 year old William Downes of Stockwell met a similar fate to the rest where he was burgled, sexually assaulted, and strangled.
His last known victim was Florence Tisdall, 83. She was a partially blind and deaf widow who lived alone at the Ranelagh Gardens Mansions in Fulham. After being raped and strangled to death, her body was found by her caretaker the next morning.
Pictures of Erskine hit the media, in order to get leads and see if there would be calls from any other witnesses. They received many calls, and one of them was from 25 year old Denise Keena who encountered him one night. She was so disturbed by the sight of him she described him like this, “He had this sort of terrible grin on his face. He looked as if he was out of control. It was a horrible, awful, disgusting expression. He had wide, staring eyes and his mouth was open. All the muscles and tendons in his face were standing out, drawn tight against the bones.” From the time of the call, it appeared that she saw him within the hour that he killed Florence.
Erskine was arrested at a social security office when authorities were able to match up his palm print with the one found at the crime scene. 74 year old Fred Prentice identified him at the police station. Prentice claimed that Erskine attacked him and tried to strangle him a month prior to his arrest. Prentice claimed that when Erskine was strangling him he would only utter one word, “KILL… KILL… KILL…”
When Prentice spoke about the attack he said, “I was absolutely terrified, but there was nothing I could do. He was sitting on my chest with his fingers clutching at my neck – I thought I was a goner. I kept pleading with him to let me go and take whatever he wanted and leave. But he took nothing, and took no notice of me. It was a nightmare. He then chucked my head against a wall and ran off. The blow almost knocked me unconscious, and I slumped to the floor too petrified to move. I suppose he thought he must have killed me, because he ran out leaving me for dead. I was too frightened even to watch him go. I shall always have his face in my memory, his terrible grin. He ruined my life.”
When Erskine was questioned about the murders he said, “I don’t remember killing anyone, I could have done it without knowing it. I am not sure if I did it.”
Aftermath and Trial:
Upon investigation, there seemed to be no sign of forced entry at the scene of the crimes. They determined that he made his way into the homes by getting through an unsecured window. It was also said that Erskine knelt on the victim’s chests as he used his hands to strangle them– one hand on their throat and one on their mouth. Four of the victims were sodomized, but authorities weren’t sure if this act took place before or after their murders.
The police already had Erskine’s fingerprints and photographs on record from his past burglary arrests. He was convicted of seven murders and the attempted murder of Fred Prentice, but police suspected him to be connected to four other murders. They did not have enough evidence to tie him to those crimes.
Erskine was found masturbating during trial which caused an uproar in court. When he was being questioned, Erskine would spend hours giggling, staring out a window, or masturbating. Erskine told the police that he was haunted by a whispering woman’s voice that came from the walls and doors. Her voice supposedly gave him dizzy spells. It seemed as though he didn’t really understand what was happening during the trial and his mind was wandering. He also fell asleep a couple times during the trial.
He was originally sentenced to life imprisonment, but was found to be suffering from chronic schizophrenia and antisocial personality disorder. With the Mental Health Act of 1983, he was sent to the maximum security Broadmoor Hospital.
A psychiatrist once claimed that Erskine couldn’t differentiate between fantasy and reality. He also stated that it appeared Erskine was at the mental age of 11.
February 1996, Erskine saved serial killer Peter Sutcliffe’s life. He was attacked by the robber Paul Wilson in the Broadmoor Hospital’s Henley Ward. Wilson asked to borrow a videotape before he attempted to strangle Sutcliffe with a cable and a pair of stereo headphones. Erskine stopped this when he heard screams from the action.
In July of 2009, Erskine’s convictions were reduced to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. It’s unlikely that he’ll be freed until at least 2028, when he’ll be 65 years old.
