Ousama Game or “King’s Game” isn’t incredible, but it’s an interesting read. It’s about a supernatural game where a class of students receive a message on their phones from the “King”. The message tells them that they’ve been forced into a game where they have to complete their challenges or they’ll face a punishment. The punishments they’d face would most likely be death in various horrible ways such as dismemberment, being burned at the stake, hanging, etc. Oh! Another thing, if you try to opt out of the game, you will also die.
What’s interesting about the game is that there’s most likely one winner at the end of the game, and the losers die. Once there is a winner he/ she will have to transfer to a new school and the game will start over there. This is pretty awful, but there is some hope to put an end to the game in general if the students work together, rather than succumbing to their emotions and killing one another.
One thing I do like about the manga is that it has a psychological element to it. We see how the students act when faced with life threatening choices. Some students even change completely, and become antagonists. It makes you think, what would you do if you were faced with the decision to kill or be killed?
This is a good manga to read once. The character development, and some of the relationships were a bit rushed. The main character was interesting, but I never felt truly attached to him honestly. I did binge read this though, because I was very intrigued by the challenges that the students had to face. I’d recommend this to horror fans who are bored, and trying to pass some time. It doesn’t feel like a waste of your life, but it’s not too memorable either.
