Richard Shepard’s The Perfection (2019) is based around Charlotte, previously the top cellist in Bachoff Academy, a prestigious school for music in Boston. Charlotte had to leave the school to take care of her sick mother. In Charlotte’s absence, Lizzy took her position of being the lead cellist of the school and Anton’s favorite student. The film begins with Charlotte returning to the music world again and meeting Anton and Lizzy in China.
I thought that this movie could’ve been really great, but there were so many random plot twists that I felt myself getting tired of watching. In one situation, the character Lizzy gets sick on the bus ride towards her backpacking adventure. She overheats, almost pisses herself, and when she vomits there are LIVE maggots mixed in with her bile. That repulsed me, but I enjoyed it for the shock factor. Lizzy, in that moment, related her sickness to the new virus that was infesting China.
At that moment in the film, I thought that the rest of the film could be about the virus. And, having it set at a classical cellist school and performance center would make it interesting, because it’s different than your typical “kids are stranded in the middle of a forest” scenario. What made the scene worse though, was that only one person barely spoke English on the bus they were traveling on, and the bus driver was also being a complete asshat. I felt that with the set up of their current situation, the film was digging into a common fear of being stranded in a foreign country.
Setting up the next scene with having the bus driver kick them off the bus, they were in the middle of a forest, had to walk to the nearest hospital, and didn’t have phone service. Imagine being in that situation. Unless you’re Bear Grylls that’s a horrifying situation. Lizzy’s illness seemed to be getting worse. To the point where we saw bugs crawling under her skin. Her whole body was infested. Charlotte all the sudden pulled out a meat cleaver and egged Lizzy on to chop off her own hand.
At the end of that scene we find out that Charlotte actually drugged Lizzy and gave her alcohol to speed up the process of having her hallucinate. By going back with a series of flashbacks and seeing Charlotte’s actions again, it was very interesting seeing how Lizzy fell into her trap. At this point in the film, it seems like the new direction of the story would be having Charlotte be a very calculated stalker who might have been jealous of Lizzy’s success- which could’ve made the film an interesting psychological horror. This also would’ve made sense, because of how she fell out of the music world due to her mother’s sickness. Charlotte could’ve made Lizzy hack her hand off, so she would never be able to play the cello again and Charlotte could take Lizzy’s place at the top. That wasn’t the case though.
There was another plot twist/ flashback sequence with a rewind effect that led us closer to the end of the movie where the cello school was actually a cult and the leader was an abuser. Charlotte cut off Lizzy’s hand to “save her” from being blinded by the cultish school. In my opinion, I would’ve rather seen Charlotte just go insane and have Lizzy try to kill her in the end for revenge. Or, have the film stick to the virus theme and it could turn into a sci-fi outbreak with the main group of characters being classical cellists. It could’ve been interesting seeing very proper and upper class characters tapping into their primal skills and fears dealing with a horrific outbreak.
But that didn’t happen.
There were honestly so many plot twists that watching the movie got tiring. Especially repeating the rewind effect over and over again.
Aside all of that, the film was interesting to watch and played on dark subjects.
