This movie was one of your typical kids go on a trip and do something stupid types. I felt very lost and confused at times when watching the film. A lot of my questions remain unanswered and not in a positive way.
The film starts out with a group of college kids on a trip to LA to go to Coachella. I actually enjoyed the start of the film, because it seemed to play the edgy reckless kid type pretty accurately. One of the main characters, Elise, the goth gf, is really pushing the group to check out popular satanic sites. She neglects to tell them that the hotel room they’ve got for the night belonged to Laney Gore, a satanist who slit her throat in the room years ago.
Of course, what else are you going to do in a room that is supposedly haunted? Use a ouija board. Nothing happens at that moment. But it shows what direction the film is going to go from there. Stupid gullible kids. I honestly thought the acting was fine, but the storyline seemed dull and semi-predictable.
The following day, our goth gf leads the group to more satanic sites such as a church and a store for satanic and horror items- including the mummified hand of a pedophile. This is where everything starts to go south. The store owner was rude to the group to the point where he threatened to cut one of their hearts out and he had a knife.
So they chose to follow him after he got out of work for the “excitement” and because it could lead them somewhere dark and strange. That was just completely idiotic to me. There were several moments in the film where it leaves you physically cringing, because it’s just another typical moment where the kids do something ridiculously stupid and you know they’re going to die. I don’t mind films of that sort when I know it’s going to be a slasher and I just want to watch people get hacked up. But this isn’t a slasher. There is no mindless gore.
One of the moments of the film that I enjoyed was how the group of kids got in contact with Alice, the girl they thought was going to be used as a virgin sacrifice. After running away and escaping the satanic cult that chased after them for intruding on their ritual. Seth drops his phone while running away and Alice calls Elise our goth gf. The person who called Seth’s phone last. They meet Alice to get the phone back. I just liked that, because we find out the girl about to be sacrificed was okay and we’re introduced to a new character/ turning point in the film. I also just found it realistic how they get in contact.
The rest of the film was very confusing and strange to me. They invite Alice into their hotel room out of pity, and she tells them that she can hear Laney Gore. She also tells them the true story of Laney Gore and how Laney slit her wrists for satan. Alice also asks them if they want to speak to Laney. Of course they say yes. They all hold hands while Alice does a satanic chant.
This whole scene ends with Alice vomiting, pissing herself, and then slitting her own throat in the hotel room, because the door to hell opened up for her. She says the door opened up for all of them.
From then on things start happening to them. This is about the point where I felt confused. When birds start dying around them and things start to break, I understand it’s very paranormal. They run into a bunch of omens and like Alice said, get welcomed into hell one by one. How unfortunate.
When they start getting killed off we honestly don’t know or find out what exactly kills them. It just seems like a dark force or demons of some sort. Some ominous dark force that wants to drag the group to hell. It starts off with Elise, who gets sick runs into a portable toilet by a construction site and then just vanishes. Only her clothes are left behind besides a number “II” which is scratched on the wall. The way she disappears seems to be the way they all go. We never see them die. They just disappear from the group one by one until Chloe (Sarah Hyland) is left behind.
Chloe ends up running around the warehouse in an attempt to escape the dark force coming after her. She runs up to a window where there’s a van approaching. She looks down at the van and sees herself and her friends. It’s the POV of the woman from the opening scene which turns out to be Chloe. I still don’t understand what’s going on. She’s in some sort of parallel universe. There is no further explanation of this.
The film ends with Chloe transported to what looks like a cemented room with no doors or windows. She’s in a large box with tallies from one to five scratched on the wall in blood. She also sees the rest of her group in flashes one by one either very grotesque and disfigured or suffering. With another flash Chloe’s mouth is sewn shut and she has no arms. The last image is of a creepy hand grabbing her face, and she cannot scream. I don’t know why it ends like this, or why she had to be armless.
Could this be her hell? Also what is going when she sees herself in the van from the window?
Watch for yourself and try to figure it out.
