Northwest, and by the edge of Mt. Fuji, Aokigahara aka “The Sea of Trees” is known for being Japan’s suicide forest. The suicide forest stretches for about 13 square miles of thick trees. Not only is it’s reputation scary, the environment within the forest is equally as uncanny.
The trees are very compact making the forest dense. When people enter the forest they feel isolated from the world, because of how the trees seem to trap them in. The trees are also twisted, and their roots sprawl across the ground. The ground itself has an uneven and rocky texture. It’s floor is also consistent of mostly volcanic rock, because of one of Mt. Fuji’s eruptions thousands of years ago. Due to the high iron levels in the soil, sometimes cell phone and GPS signals are disrupted inside Aokigahara. There are several icy caves which are frozen year round in the forest that are very popular tourist destinations.
The Sea of Trees is one of the most popular suicide destinations in the world. This is partially because the forest is so thick that corpses can get lost in the foliage. The most common method of suicide in the forest is by hanging, but overdosing is also commonly seen. Bodies aren’t found sometimes for years due to the forest being so dense. In 2003 alone, over 100+ bodies were found in the forest. In 2010, it was reported by the police that over 200 people had tried to attempt suicide there. Some officials try not to cause too much attention to the numbers of the suicide victims to deflect negative attention from the forest. Police have conducted annual searches for bodies since 1970.
Suicide prevention associations and police have put several signs by the entrance and throughout the forest to spread positivilty and help prevent suicide. Some of the signs say things such as “Think carefully about your children, your family” and “Please don’t suffer alone, and first reach out”. Reportedly, a psychiatrist stated that some people commit suicide in the forest to go unnoticed. Others also go to the forest with the motivation of not dying alone since it is a popular suicide destination.
Other than the signs, the government has gone to other measures in attempt to prevent suicide. Some of those methods are raising the railings on bridges, increasing the amount of police and other authoritarian figures to patrol the forest, and also to deter the media from pushing the notion of the forest being a place for suicide.
The forest has been reported to be haunted by “yūrei” or spirits of the suicide victims. Folklore claims that these spirits are very vengeful, and will torment those who wander around the forest. The spirits are also said to lure travelers that are depressed off path to get lost in the forest. The reputation behind the forest has been around for several years, and has several times influenced the media. As well as a couple novels, manga, poetry, and video games, there was an American film in 2016 based around Aokigahara called, “The Forest”.
In 2016, Japan’s suicide rate was so high that it was declared as one of the top 10 highest countries in the world. It was said that Japan’s suicide rate is much higher than what is reported. Some say that is due to a lot of people’s financial issues which induce anxiety and other mental issues.
