Cori Schimko is a Photographer, Multimedia Producer, Poet, songwriter and theatrical performer based in Nyack, New York. Cori has also worked in the music industry as not only a visual artist for bands and musicians, but as a concert producer as well. Most of her influences come from vintage home photography, unsettling aesthetics featuring liminal space, magical realism, and tailored childhood nostalgia.
We picked her brain in this interview, and got to know more about her art and horror inspirations.
CoM: Why do you create?
Everything from my home decoration, to the way I dress, and the values I believe are all touched by my creative passions. Each creation, meticulously formulated to create a satisfaction that can only be quenched by living my art in order to give it breathe. Every time in my life that I have stopped creating art and/ pushed back against my artistic side, things in my life fall apart. The privilege to produce art is not something that blesses me, regretfully, all of the time, but it is a necessity that I have to fit into my life. Its necessity is like blinking or swallowing spit. I create, because I have to, my humanity and being will fade to nothing.
CoM: Tell us about your influences with horror and the abnormal.
As far as horror, more recently, I have developed a preoccupation with witches and witchcraft, which throughout my portrait work for the past couple years are prevalent. I also have a fascination in insane asylums and justice for the mentally ill. Last summer, I did a landscape set in several spaces in Letchworth Village in Stony Point. It was so hot outside, but the buildings inside were so cold from insulation, lack of sunlight, and mold from leaking water; not to mention the place is full of asbestos. Shooting the decay of a property that has been vacantly rotting since 1996 is cathartic. There are calendars from over 20 years ago, random floppy discs, broken AV Televisions, abandoned classroom supplies and loads of polarizing graffiti.
CoM: What’s your favorite horror movie?
I’ll list a few because I can’t pick one
The Exorcist: Everything from the acting to the innovative 1970s Special Effects, make this one of the best and most memorable horror movies of the 20th century. The skepticism of religion, as was popular in few other brave films of its time, was also something that puts this movie in my top three. Not to mention, The Exorcist goes all out in content with no regard for anything that could Be deemed ”too disturbing for a modern audience.”
The Lost Boys: One could argue this campy film to not count under the horror genre, but that fashion, casting, and high budget special effects and set design are not be slept on. The 1980s were characterized with flamboyancy and exaggerated, cartoon-like aesthetic. Adding ‘camp’ to horror was very popular in the 1980s and made this niche genre more palatable for a wider audience. Many of the style trends popularized by e-girls and e-boys can be spotting in the outfits of the vampires throughout the film and have even influenced character aesthetics in ”Stranger Things.”
A Clockwork Orange: Categorized more accurately as a ‘thriller,’ this film is a classic Kubrick film that gained its fame (or infamy depending on personal feelings) during its release in the 1970s. Its original NC-17 rating was acquired for its graphic and almost glamorized depictions of sexual assault and general immorally driven violence delivered on a melodramatic platter. This is a movie so strange and chaotic that a psychological thriller of this caliber would not and probably could not be made again.
CoM: What are some of your goals as an artist, and how would you like to affect the community?
I have a journal full of goals and project ideas that may or may not happen. As far as projects that have been in the works for an extended period of time:
I started a poetry book that I have been meaning to finish for the past two years. The unofficial working title is, “The Funeral Florist: Apologies for All.” The time to release this is very close. I believe that a project is not releasable until the very real struggle that is written about is mentally worked through and is at peace with the artist. I also plan to have illustrations and have to gather some bravery to do a couple more revisions.
Explaining goals I have as an artist feels selfish and one sided to me. I generally have a really hard time being selfish about my art. I will explain my creative values.
I’d like to provide a memorable experience for my clients. To get the most out of any client, with or without modeling experience, is to give them confidence, provide emotional support when needed, listen and accommodate to your model’s needs, and interact.
I believe music playlists are mandatory. Ask your client to make a playlist to get them in the mood for the theme of the shoot. The mood of the playlist will help you capture the most authentic photos of your subject.
When your art involves another person, don’t be selfish: It is cool and appropriate to take your art seriously, but when you agree to collaborate with another person, all selfishness or personal reservations and limits must be thrown out in order to have a successful collaboration. YOUR vision is not the only vision once it is agreed to be shared with a collaborator or client.
I aim to help build confidence that anybody can be a star, anybody can look beautiful while still being their authentic self. I’m not worried about being influential because that is a by-product of giving someone a memorable or moving experience.
I am always down to collaborate with artists from all over. I love learning from other artists and sharing experiences. Everyone should meet and pump up as many artists that they enjoy and break their inner circle of people they already know. Making connections is so important and helps a lot in the long run.
