Antonio Ali is a Denver based artist who creates, but is not limited to painting, drawing, and graphic designing. His work is very trippy and interesting. He uses a lot of bright colors while keeping dark themes. We got to pick his brain in this interview to get to know more about him and his creations.
CoM: Tell me about yourself, what type of art do you make. How did you develop your style?
I guess I would describe my style as kinda like… comic book/video game-ish/grunge/pop. I like to draw grungy stuff, but with bright colors. I grew up reading X-men comics, and basically anything I could get my hands on with art that I thought was cool. I’m self-taught other than classes in high school, and during that time I just tried to push the envelope on what would get me in trouble. I remember getting kicked out of pottery class for making tea cups with nipples all around the outside. Now I just like to paint/draw trippy shit.
CoM: What do you like to use to create this art whether it’s traditional or digital?
Honestly I’m partial to traditional art for a lot of my work. I usually use acrylic paint and ink washes. But recently, I’ve been using a lot of digital tools to create more cartoon/street style art, I use that kinda stuff to make stickers.
CoM: How long does it take you to create a piece?
That’s such a hard question. I’ve had 8×10 canvases that take me days, and some huge products that I’ve killed in one 6 hour sitting. So, I guess it depends on my mindset and how clear my vision is on what I want.
CoM: Why do you create? What inspires you to make that type of art?
I like to make stuff that combines grungy horror themes with pop culture and trippy colors. Really nothing to be taken seriously. I appreciate deeper meanings within art… but I wouldn’t look past the surface on anything I create. I honestly just smoke A LOT of weed, and like to make shit that i think looks dope.
CoM: What are some of your influences with horror and the abnormal?
I watch a ton of horror movies now. Not sure why, but as a kid I was so scared of that kinda stuff. Then as I got older I was just all gloom and doom. I started listening to heavy metal and developing my own tastes and style. I was/am obsessed with anything occult and medieval. I feel like that comes through in my work the most. I also play a ton of video games that have pretty intense themes. I guess my favorite types of horror movies are polar opposites to be honest. I love a deep psycological horror mind fucks… but also I love a campy horror that I can laugh at.
CoM: What are some of your goals as an artist?
I feel like the next step for me is learning to tattoo. It’s always been a dream of mine. I think it would be so rewarding to see my art on someone’s body.
