Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

In Game Enemies:

Within the Baker family you’ll have to fight the Baker family. Each member of the family has their own unique style, sadistic horrors they put Ethan through, and abilities. Through fighting each family member, more of the plot is revealed. Other than the Bakers, Ethan will come in contact with many enemies including some of the Bakers’ experiments. These are some of the common enemies that Ethan will have to face:

Molded: There are humanoid zombie-like monsters covered in mold called “Molded”, which are the primary enemy in the game. The Molded spawn in areas that are covered in mold. These enemies used to be human, but their bodies got infected and overthrown with bacteria.

Fat Molded: These are variants of the Molded enemies, but appear much bigger and bloated. They move slower than the normal Molded creatures, and have different abilities. They can projectile vomit an acidic substance which damages your health and can also affect your vision.

Crawler Molded: This is another variant of the Molded enemies, but they’re labeled as Crawlers for an obvious reason. They can crawl on all four legs, and have boosted speed. This particular form of Molded can and will charge and jump at you.

Spiders: These enemies don’t directly attack you, but cling to doors and other surfaces which usually prevents you from getting an item. 

Large Flying Bugs: These guys will fly around and attack you. They’re commonly seen around Marguerite Baker.

Bug Swarms: These are really annoying enemies. They cluster in a large nest, and once that’s broken they’ll fly around as a swarm and attack you. The nest will continue to spawn these swarms until it’s destroyed.

Aside from the final battle, my personal favorite family member to fight was the mother, Marguerite Baker. She was just so gross. I loved it. The son, Lucas Baker, was pretty interesting to come across as well. Really reminded me of the Saw movies. 

Atmosphere:

The atmosphere is very bleak. The house itself is dark, grimy, but there are items like old photographs and toys around the house that are traces of the family’s humanity. These objects are heavily contrasted to the horrific elements within the house; the fridge is full of human meat, the metal in the garage is covered in mold and rust, the house itself is shanty and decrepit. You really feel disgusted as you’re going through certain areas of the game. That dark visual aspect mixed with the constant creaking of the house and other eerie noises makes the atmosphere even more unsettling. There is a constant build up of tension and the player is put on edge wondering if an enemy will jump out at any moment.

Summary and Commentary: 

RE7 is a great game that isn’t limited to just fans of the franchise, but for horror fans in general. There’s been mixed commentary about the switch to first person, but I personally think it adds to the horror aspect since it limits the players perspective. Ethan himself is a normal guy with no combat skills trying his best. Playing the game really puts you in his shoes and makes you feel helpless. The other main characters are interesting, and so are the enemies. Not only is the design fantastic, but the storyline is well thought out and is great on it’s own. Aside from the supernatural aspects, the storyline is not too far off from what could be reality. It really taps on the fear of human nature.
