Dean Corll The Candy Man

Name: Dean Corll

AKA: The Candy Man

Born: Dec 24, 1939

Died: Aug 8, 1973

Nationality: American

Victims: 28+

Early Life:

Dean Corll was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1939. His parents divorced when he was about the age of seven. Reportedly, they never had a good marriage. His father was also known for being a strict disciplinarian over the smallest incidents. In 1950 his parents attempted to get back together, but they ended up divorcing again a few years later. Corll’s mother gained custody over him and his younger brother Stanley, and remarried to a traveling salesman. She moved the family to Vidor, Texas where they would open up a candy business.

The candy business Pecan Prince, was initially located in their garage. Dean and his brother Stanley would aid their parents in running the company. They would usually manage the candy making machine, and package the produced products. Working day and night didn’t keep Dean from attending school. Even before working he was always known for keeping to himself. He was more of a loner, but he dated a couple girls while in high school.

In 1958, his family moved to Houston where business was better for them, and they opened up their own shop. Corll would give out free candy to the neighborhood kids, especially the teenage boys in Houston. Because of this, the children gave him the name of “The Candy Man”. Corll was seen as friendly, happy, and caring. Nobody would expect him to turn into an extremely sadistic murderer.

The first time his parents divorced, he was diagnosed with rheumatic fever. This would later leave him with a heart murmur, and cause him to be absent from school constantly. Despite his medical condition, Dean Corll was drafted into the military. There he displayed signs of homosexuality. Some of his peers made note of how Corll would act around males, and thought he might be homosexual. Corll reportedly hated military service, and was discharged with honorable mention after ten months.

Corll’s mother a few years later told him to move in with his grandmother back in Indiana, and he did so. When in Indiana, he dated a girl who proposed to him, but he turned her down. He returned back home after his mother divorced her second husband, and then helped her manage the family business once again.

The new business name was the Corll Candy Company, and Dean became the Vice President. There were a couple warning signs towards Corll due to his flirtatious behavior towards several young boys. An employed boy complained about Corll by saying he would make sexual advances towards him. Upon hearing this, his mother fired the boy immediately. There were other occasions where he would make sexual advances to the boys working in the shop as well.

One of the boys that Corll targeted was David Brooks. He was 12 years old when they met. Brooks, like other children, met Corll as he was giving out free candy. Brooks as well as many other teenage boys hung out with Corll by the pool table in the back of the candy shop. Corll flirted with and groomed him over the course of two years. When Brooks was 14, Corll began sexually abusing him. Corll would offer him money to allow him to perform fellatio on him. He would also bribe him to keep shut about what was going on by offering him gifts and money.

1968, the Corll Candy Company went out of business. Corll’s mother and half sister moved to Colorado. Although he spoke on the phone with his mother often, he never saw her again. After the candy shop failed, Corll worked as an electrician testing electrical ray systems.

The Candy Man:

Dean Corll was a murder, kidnapper, and rapist. He was the reason for the Houston Mass Murders, which at the time were the worst serial killings of the States. He mostly targeted teenage boys when stalking out his prey. Although he was the main killer behind all of this, he was not alone in his crimes. David Brooks and Elmer Wayne Henley were Corll’s two teenage accomplices.

1970, the first known victim of The Candy Man was killed. Jeffrey Konan, an 18 year old college student, was picked up by Corll as he was hiking. It’s most likely that Konan got in the car with him, because Corll might’ve offered to drive him to his parents house. Konan’s body was buried in High Island Beach. Around this time he showed more of his interest in sadism and bondage with young men.

In Corll’s apartment he had a torture board, which was a large 8×2 wooden plank that he’d tie boys up to. Around the time of Jeffrey Konan’s death, David Brooks stopped Corll as he was in the middle of raping two teenage boys. The boys were restricted of movement, because they had been strapped up to the torture board. Corll later admitted to Brooks that he murdered them. In order to keep Brooks shut, Corll offered to buy him a car, which Brooks agreed to. After murdering the boys, Corll bought him a green Chevrolet Corvette.

Corll later offered Brooks about 200 dollars for every boy that he could bring to his apartment. On one occasion, Brooks had brought two boys to Corll from a religious rally. Corll raped and killed the boys. Another time, Brooks and Corll saw two young brothers walking home. Corll lured them to his van and apartment where he then raped and killed them. He buried their bodies in a boat shed that he owned. This boat shed would later become a mass grave for many young boys.

One of the boys that Brooks brought to Corll was Elmer Wayne Henley. When Brooks gave Henley to Corll, he told Henley that he had been sold to a sex slavery ring. Corll decided not to rape and murder the boy, but to recruit him as a part of his murderous team. He offered Henley the same deal he was doing with Brooks if he could lure boys to his apartment. At first, Henley was hesitant with the offer, but he later agreed due to his parents financial hardships.

In 1972, they encountered one of Henley’s acquaintances, Frank Aguire. They lured him to Corll’s apartment by promising Aguire drugs and alcohol. Aguire also felt more comfortable, because he knew Henley. When Aguire was in Corll’s apartment, Corll handcuffed him and pushed him against a table. Henley pleaded for Corll not to hurt Aguire, but Corll killed him. Corll also informed Henley that there was no sex slavery ring, and he is killing every boy that they bring to him. Henley buried Aguire’s body by High Island Beach, and followed whatever Corll said. Brooks though, said that Henley was sadistic and enjoyed murdering some of the boys himself.

Between late 1970 to mid 1973, Brooks and Henley lured a minimum of 28 boys to Corll. Several of the boys that Brooks and Henley brought to Corll were friends or acquaintances of them. The victims felt comfortable with the three of them, so they wouldn’t feel as though they were in any type of danger. Most of the boys brought to Corll had a connection to him in some type of way whether they were socially acquainted or if they were employed by the candy company. All of the boys brought to Corll were between the ages 13 and 20. Corll and his teenage accomplices would use Corll’s white van or Brook’s Chevy to seek out their prey. The three of them would offer candy, alcohol, or a place to party to get the boys into the van.

Once in Corll’s apartment, the boys would be given enough drugs or alcohol until they passed out, or by force bound and gagged in many different ways. Henley even tricked a boy into trying on handcuffs. This was the infamous handcuff trick that Corll taught them. Henley handcuffed himself, but kept a key in his back pocket. He undid his handcuffs, and told the victim that they can get out of them without a key. Once the victim attempted this, they wouldn’t be able to get out, and Henley told them that they were sold in a sex slavery ring. He would then bring the victims to Corll.

Upon capture, the boys would be stripped naked and tied up to Corll’s torture board. Corll would rape them for sometimes days at a time. It was said that the more Corll liked a boy, the longer he would keep him. Once Corll was done with them, his victims were either strangled or shot to death. Corll being the sadist that he was, liked to see the boys suffer. Sometimes he would shoot the boys and let them slowly bleed to death. It was reported that he shot the lower jaw off of one of his victims. Instead of putting the boy out of his misery, he let him bleed out. Many of the boy’s bodies were disposed of in his Corll’s boat shed. He liked to keep keys of the boys as souvenirs of their murders.

Often Corll would make the boys call or write postcards to their families excusing their disappearances. Doing this would also make the police believe the missing boys were just runaways. Most of the boys were taken from the Houston Heights area, which was a low income area of downtown Houston. Some parents started searches for their sons, and would put up posters of the missing boys. The public began to notice more boys had been missing, but nobody imagined it was the doing of one of the country’s most prolific serial killers.

One of the victims, Mark Scott, was forced to write his parents a postcard after being captured by The Candy Man. The postcard described that he had relocated to Austin and found a good job, and his parents shouldn’t worry about him. He was 17 at the time of disappearance in 1972. Prior to receiving the postcard, his parents contacted the police and reported that their son was missing. When the police saw the card they dismissed the Scott’s and claimed the boy to be a runaway like the others. It was not illegal to have children runaway, so the police said there was nothing they could do.

Torture Methods:

Dean Corll did many heinous torture acts towards his victims the most well known being his torture board. The torture board was a piece of wood which was about 8ft long and 2ft wide. There were holes drilled into each of the corners. He used this board in most of his murders by tying the victims hands to the upper holes and their feet to the bottom ones with nylon rope. Once the victim was tied up to his board, he would molest and rape them.

One of the most sadistic things he would do to his victims was torture them with glass rods. He would take long thin glass rods and insert them in his victims urethra before smashing the rod. He would do this rather often when the victims were tied up to the torture board. Police found several broken rods in his room upon searching the house, which was evidence that this was one of Corll’s favorite methods of torture.

One of his victims upset him so much that Corll actually gnawed off his genitals while being tied up to the torture board. When the police searched his boat shed, they found a penis and testicles in a plastic bag. Based off of the wounds on the genitalia, it seemed to have been ripped off with one bite.

He ripped pubic hairs off of his victims using either pliers or his own fingers. It was said that some of his victims passed out from the pain, and others endured it all fully awake.

Some objects found in his room were a massive 18 inch dildo and a large wooden box. Henley said that the box was a tad smaller than a coffin and was used to transport bodies. But upon discovery of the box, there were holes drilled in it that seemed to be used as an air passageway. Nylon rope was also inside the box, which suggests that he kept the victims in there alive.

The Candy Man’s Downfall:

In 1973 Corll’s murders had come to an end. Henley brought Timothy Kerley to a “party” at Corll’s apartment. Kerley also brought Rhonda Williams along. Corll was irritated that Williams was there, and saw her as an intruder. She was the first female that was brought over to his apartment.

Corll offered them drugs and alcohol. But because of Rhonda’s presence, Corll bound Kerley, Williams, and even Henley shortly after. When Henley woke up on the ground, Corll told him that he was going to kill them all since he had brought a girl there. Corll said to Henley, “I’m going to kill you all, but first I’m going to have my fun!”

Henley begged Corll to spare him and offered to rape, torture, and kill Kerley and Williams alongside him. Corll agreed and untied him, then they both went to tie the two victims to opposite sides of his bed. Corll said that he was going to rape Kerley. He handed Henley a knife, told him to cut Williams’ clothes off and do the same to her.

Corll stripped naked. Henley began to cut away Willams’ clothes. Both victims had awoken at this point and were struggling before them. Henley removed Willams’ gag, which made her ask, “Is this for real?” Henley said, “Yes.” Williams in response asked, “Are you going to do anything about it?”

Henley asked Corll if he could take Willams’ to another room, but Corll ignored him. Henley then grabbed Corll’s gun and shouted, “You’ve gone far enough Dean!” Corll moved away from Kerley, then Henley said, “I can’t go any further! I can’t have you kill all my friends!”

Corll approached Henley mocking him, “You won’t do it!” Henley shot Corll, but it wasn’t fatal. He fired another few rounds to Corll’s shoulder before he ran out of the room. Henley shot at him three more times, and Corll fell down the stairs. He laid there naked as he died facing a wall.

Henley untied Kerley and Williams. He told them that he wanted to leave, and they should all get out of there. Kerley convinced Henley to call the police and tell them what happened.

Aftermath:

Aug 8, 1973 Henley called the Pasadena Police. Over the phone he said, “Y’all better come here right now! I just killed a man!” Minutes later the police came to find the three of them on the porch of Corll’s apartment. Kerley later told the police that Henley said if he wasn’t his friend he would’ve received 200 dollars for him.

Once in custody, Henley admitted to everything. He spoke about Brooks and him being involved with the murders, and revealed to them where the bodies had been disposed of.

Police found 17 bodies of young boys in Corll’s boat shed. They found other bodies by the Bolivar Peninsula and others in a woodland area at Lake Sam Rayburn. The police couldn’t identify the 28th victim until 1983. They also aren’t sure if Corll killed more boys which Henley and Brooks were unaware of.

Henley was found guilty on the account of six murders. Brooks tried to portray himself as a more silent partner, and told them that he wasn’t present for any of the rapes or murders. Brooks was indicted for four murders, and found guilty for one. Both Henley and Brooks were sentenced to life in prison. Henley was incarcerated at the Mark W. Michael Unit in Anderson, Texas. Brooks was incarcerated at the Terrell Unit by Rosharon, Texas.
