Alex’s Gore Interview – Church of Mena

Alex’s Gore is a born and bred NYC makeup artist. We discovered her through her fantastic special effects makeup, which ranges from the creation of monsters to wounds and gore. She’s a multi-talented artist and is not limited to just fx, she does beauty makeup as well.

We got to take a look into her world through this interview, and spoke to her about working on movies and the process of how she brings monsters to life.

CoM: What type of horror themed art do you make, and how did you develop your style?

I don’t truly have a theme but I love to do gore makeup, so if I had to pick a theme it would definitely be injuries! I developed my style over the years after playing with makeup and watching A LOT of movies. The exorcist is definitely a huge influence on my work; my work even translates into how I dress and look!

CoM: How long have you been in the film industry? What was your first project?

I started makeup in 2012, but professionally started in the industry in 2019. My first project outside of school was a student zombie film that really confirmed for me how much I love my job.

CoM: What would you say are your greatest influences?

My greatest influences are two makeup artists one who has unfortunately passed away. His name is Dick Smith (rest in peace) he worked on the exorcist, and is basically the godfather of fx makeup. My second influence is a makeup artist who goes by the stage name ishotthedead. He is self taught and, collabs with a brush brand I really love so that gives me hope that I can become a large name in the industry as well.

CoM: What was your favorite look to create? And, what was the strangest look you were asked to create?

I love creating zombies! They are my favorite thing to put together because there’s really no rules with zombies they don’t look the same. The strangest look I was asked to create was a gouged out eye, with white skin and bright purple and black veins.

CoM: What was the most time consuming look you had to create?

The most time consuming look I created was ‘lady krampus’. It was a full body paint with a full face of prosthetic pieces, I also had to do the models hair and I was the only MUA who was at the shoot!

CoM: Film sets get crazy at times, what was the most wild set you’ve worked on?

The most wild set I worked on was for an adult swim launch, there were sloths and a gothic music show and dancers. It was super fun!

CoM: What makeup product do you use the most?

The makeup product I use the most is Ben Nye’s blood gel.

CoM: Would you say you’re immune to gore or gnarly scenes in horror movies, because you’re always around sfx makeup?

Yes I definitely am immune to certain things, but if it’s done really really well some stuff still freaks me out, I’m not immune to real gore unfortunately.

CoM: I’ve seen some sfx mua’s get really creative with the types of materials they incorporate with a look. Was there ever an instance where you incorporated like at home materials or random objects in a look?

I’ve used coffee beans, toilet paper, paper towels, forks, and even soda cans.

CoM: What are some of your goals as an artist?

My goals as an MUA is to get to LA and be part of the horror movie industry!
