Anna Spooks Interview

Anna Spooks is an artist involved in the horror community in many ways. She is the co-host of the horror podcast Hauntsville Cryptcast, which discusses and reviews different genres and categories of the horror world. She is also a co-judge and host of the Scared For Your Liife horror film festival, which showcases indie filmmakers from all over the world. Aside from that, she is also a sculptor and creates all sorts of spooky creatures!

We got to know more about her and her work in this interview.

CoM: What got you into horror?

When I was a kid I was always obsessed with spooky things, and would watch things like Scooby Doo and Tim Burton movies constantly. I first discovered horror when I was around 8 years old, and one of my older brothers decided to show me The Exorcist. I laughed at first, then was shocked, and then laughed again, but was left with the imagery for weeks afterwards. The slight fear turned into a desire to watch more, but my brother had obviously gotten in trouble for showing me that film, so he then showed me Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca as a lighter option. It was my first black and white movie, and also the first time I realised horror didn’t mean a film needed to be gruesome. I was fascinated from there on out!

CoM: Your sculptures are so cool! How long does it usually take to make a piece?

Thank you! Time to make completely depends on the piece really. Some designs I think of are super quick and only take about 10 minutes to sculpt, and 10 minutes to paint, but more detailed pieces take a whole lot longer. The Creature From the Black Lagoon hand that I sculpted, and is now used as the trophies for the Scared For Your Liife film festival, took almost a week to sculpt due to size and detail, especially as I had to use several different reference pictures to find what detail was needed. I started sculpting because I’ve always been fascinated with stop motion animation, and I intended to start making my own short films, but started by practicing making figures and props. I will eventually create puppets for short spooky films though.

CoM: Can you tell us more about the festival, how did you get involved with that, and how does it feel to be judging films? That must be exciting, but I can imagine it’s a lot of work.

The festival is called Scared For Your Liife, and it is a short horror film festival that is part of the Long Island International Film Expo. Our podcast, Hauntsville Cryptcast, were lucky enough to be asked by the directors of LIIFE to host and judge the festival as Anthony is both a host of the podcast, and has also been helping judge the film expo for quite a few years now. We judge the festival along with our friend Jon from Moonlight Madness Reviews, who may as well be a part of the podcast team by now! The festival is super exciting, but definitely hard work! Sitting through every submission, judging and scoring them to decide which will make it into the festival, then scoring those selected for winners of each category, and setting up for the festival is all hard work, but so worth it. We are already accepting submissions for this year’s festival, which is open to any filmmaker, from anywhere in the world. The festival takes place in Long Island, New York, and we were lucky enough to host it at my favourite venue- The Long Island Puppet Theater, which is the most magical place I’ve ever been.

CoM: What is your favorite sub-genre of horror films?

Hmm, this is a tough one! I am a complete nerd when it comes to practical special effects in cinema, which I still think every filmmaker should be using as they don’t age like a lot of CGI does. So I think my favourite sub-genre would have to be creature features for that reason.

CoM: Tell me about your podcast! How long have you been doing it? What was your favorite episode you did?

The podcast is called Hauntsville Cryptcast, which you can find on iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, and various other podcast platforms. We’ve been doing the podcast for about a year and a half now. It began after I was visiting New York to see my partner, Anthony, and a group of us went to see the latest Halloween movie. Afterwards Anthony, myself, and our friend Doza were discussing the movie and decided to do a podcast episode about it just for fun. After recording that first episode we had so much fun we decided to just keep doing them. We didn’t expect to gain the amount of listeners we have, so that was a really nice surprise. We need to get our social media following to reflect the number of listeners, but we’re working on putting more content on our social media from now on. My favourite episode to record was probably the Women in Horror episode we put out during Women in Horror Month, just because it’s something super important to me and it’s so nice to give recognition to those women in the horror community that work behind the scenes to create amazing work out of their passion for the genre.

CoM: Are you more of a Freddy Krueger type person or Jason Voorhees?

I would have to say Freddy is probably my favourite of the two, although I love both. I think Freddy’s character is only made so compelling through Robert Englund’s performance though, and I’m grateful to actors like him for staying so involved with the horror community.

CoM: In your opinion, what is the most underrated horror film?

There are so many, but I think films like Near Dark, Pontypool, and The People Under the Stairs are definitely not spoken about enough. Each of them have a significant originality that they bring to the genre.

CoM: Anything else you’d like our audience to know about you or your art?

I get asked a lot when I’m going to open a shop for my sculpts, which is something I’m working on, but I do also take commissions, so in the meantime I am available for those. You can find information about the podcast and the festival on our Instagram Page @hauntsvillecryptcast.
