Early Life:
Issei Sagawa was born on April 26, 1949 in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan to wealthy parents. Sagawa was born prematurely and was reported to be small enough to fit in the palm of his father’s hand. Sagawa has one sibling, a brother. Sagawa had reported that his first thoughts of cannibalism began in first grade. He reported that he had seen his classmate’s thighs and thought to himself “mmm that looks delicious”. He reported that he had always had skinny legs that “looked like pencils” and that he often felt weak, ugly and small.” He denied thoughts of wanting to kill a potential victim just “gnaw on their flesh.”
At age 24 while in Tokyo Sagawa stalked a German woman home and proceeded to break into her apartment while she was sleeping. Sagawa’s desire was to cannibalize the woman and slice off parts of her butt and leave the apartment with the flesh. However, while in the apartment the woman had woken up, pushed him and called the police. He was caught by police and charged with attempted rape, keeping the true reasons for entering the apartment to himself.
In 1977 at age 27, Sagawa moved to France and attended the Sorbonne in Paris to pursue his Ph.D in literature. He reported that “almost every night I would bring a prostitute home and try to shoot them.’ He was not successful in these attempts because “for some reason my fingers froze up and I could not pull the trigger.” Eventually Sagawa would succeed in his attempt and experience the suppressed desire of cannibalism.
Cannibal:
Sagawa had gathered the courage to succeed with his cannibalistic desires on June 11, 1981 after he invited a fellow classmate Renee Hartevelt, 25 to his apartment for dinner and to study. He admitted to a prior attempt to kill his victim, but the gun had misfired, he reported “it made me more hysterical and I knew I simply had to kill her.” She had been selected because of her health and beauty, insecurities he had within himself.
He claimed that his plan to kill and eat her was to ‘absorb her energy.’ When Hartevelt entered the apartment they started reading poetry for the ‘assignment’ he invited her over to work on. Sagawa had other plans and shot her in the back of the neck with a rifle and fainted after the shooting because of shock. He awoke sometime later and had considered to calling an ambulance but then thought “Hang on don’t be stupid. You’ve been dreaming about this for 32 years and it is actually happening.” He proceeded to have sex with the corpse of his victim and as he tried biting into her skin realized his teeth were not sharp enough, so he left to purchase a butcher’s knife to carve into her flesh.
Sagawa spent time eating various parts of her body which included her breasts and face and saving other parts in the fridge. He took photos of her at each stage of eating and then tried to dump her body into a lake in the Bois de Boulogne. He was arrested by French police after being caught carrying two suitcases that contained the remains of his victim. He reports that the regret he had was that he did not eat her alive stating “What I truly wished was to eat her living flesh, nobody believes me, but my ultimate intention was to eat her, not necessarily to kill her.”
The Capture and Charge:
After being caught by French police he was held for two years waiting to stand trial. His father who was wealthy provided Sagawa with a defense lawyer for his trial. However, before he could even stand trial he was found mentally unfit to stand trial and was sentenced to be committed to an asylum. After his sentence, his parents petitioned to have Sagawa released and brought back home to Japan because he was ‘too far away from home.’ So he was sent back to Japan, where his parents found a psychologist to re-evaluate their son and declare he was not insane and did not need to be committed. Since he had left France the charges had been dropped and the documents were sealed, legally speaking Sagawa could not be detained in Japan, On August 12, 1986 he checked himself out of the hospital and is still free to this day.
Life After:
Sagawa’s crime and release had given him a ‘celebrity status.’ Between 1986 and 1997 he often was a guest speaker on television chat shows, wrote a book, appeared on a cooking show and in a porn movie he was invited to chew on his female co-star’s butt. Once the celebrity status wore off, he found it difficult to seek employment. He almost had the opportunity to work in a French-Lanugage school because he impressed the manager by using his real name, but because of employee protests this was rejected. In 2005 his parents died, Sagawa was not allowed to attend the funeral and lived off welfare for a while. Since 2013 he has been in the full time care of his brother because of a cerebral infarction that caused permanent damage to his nervous system.
The Rolling Stones:
In December of 1984 The Rolling Stones released a song named “Too Much Blood” which is loosely based on the case of Issei Sawaga. Mick Jagger described the song dealing with the growing portrait of violence in the media and the case of Issei Sagawa. Mick Jagger stated ‘Well there was this scandalous, murderous story in France-it was a true story-about this Japanese guy who murdered this girl and it sort of captured the imagination of the French public, and the Japanese.” The song was designed to incorporate an anti-violence theme.
