Welcome to the family.

Jeffrey Dhamer

Name: Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer

AKA: Milwaukee Cannibal, Milwaukee Monster

Born: May 21, 1960

Died: November 28, 1994

Nationality: American

Victims: 17

Early Life:

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 to Joyce and Lionel Dahmer and is the older brother of David. Dahmer had been described by his parents as a ‘happy’ child, however after a double hernia surgery that occurred in 1964  when he was four; he was described to be more withdrawn. During this time Dahmer’s little brother was born and his family had moved to different parts of Ohio before settling in 1970.

Dahmer’s mother had been hospitalized twice, had a history of suicide and had suffered from an addiction to medications. It was later discovered that his mother had been struggling with her mental illness while pregnant with Dahmer and had used numerous prescription medications during the pregnancy. Dahmer’s mother and father constantly fought in front of him while growing up and there was a lot of tension in the house.

Dahmer from an early age had a collection of animals and would often look in ditches or take them from off the street and bring them home or in the woods behind his house. Dahmer’s interest in dead animals may have begun at age four when his father had noticed that Dahmer was ‘oddly thrilled’ with the sound bones would make. When he was 10 years old Dahmer had asked his father what would occur if he was to put chicken bones in bleach. His father who had studied chemistry in college believed that Dahmer was interested in learning about the subject and proceeded to tell him how to clean and preserve his collection properly.

Dahmer had noted later that his sexual ‘compulsions’ began at age 15. He had said that the sexual fantasies were towards boys and included submissions, violence and death. His drinking began around this time to suppress his urges to act on his fantasies and because he had no one that he could talk about what he was experiencing.

At age 16 Dahmer had become fascinated with a jogger and proceeded to stalk him; he experienced fantasies about rapping the jogger and had planned to attack him. On the day that Jeffrey decided to attack the jogger he had waited on the regular route in the bushes with a bat, luckily for the jogger he decided not to run that day.

While in school Dahmer had few friends but was able to entertain his classmates by acting out seizures that sometimes included knocking over items and making loud noises. These pranks had been known as ‘Doing the Dahmer’ and had become widely popular in school. By 1977 Dahmer had taken to drinking daily and would often bring both beer and liquor to school by placing it in the lining of his army jacket. By 1978 his parents finally divorced and his father moved out of the house, by May Dahmer had graduated High School and within three weeks of his graduation he commited his first murder.

The First Murder:

Three weeks after he graduated from High School Dahmer committed his first murder. At this time Dahmer had been living in his parents house alone. Dahmer’s mother had moved out with his younger brother and his father had been living in a motel in the area. Dahmer had picked up 18 year old Steven Mark Hicks as Hicks was on his way to a rock concert. Dahmer had brought him back to the house to hang out and drink.

The pair spent a few hours listening to music, drinking and had sex, but when Hicks was ready to leave Dahmer did not want him to leave and hit him over the head with a 10 pound dumbbell. While Hicks was unconscious Dahmer strangled him to death and continued to masterbate over his corpse. Dahmer after he was done moved the corpse into a crawl space under the house and chopped Hicks up before burying him into a shallow grave. A few weeks later, Dahmer dug up Hick’s corpse, cut his flesh from the bones and placed the pieces in acid. Dahmer used a sledgehammer to crush Hick’s bones and spread them all behind the house.

The Army:

After dropping out of college Dahmer’s father begged him to join the US army. Dahmer enrolled as a combat medic in Germany but had been honorably discharged in March of 1981 after his drinking began to affect his performance. Two soldiers had come forward to say tha Dahmer had raped them during his time in the army. One of the soldiers had said that Dahmer raped him repeatedly over the course of 17 months and the other soldier said Dahmer raped him once after being drugged.

The Murders:

Dahmer had stated that his killing spree began after he was home from the army. Dahmer had brought Steven Tuomi back to his Embassy Suite hotel room with the intentions to “only drug him.” When Dahmer woke up the next morning Tuomi was dead and Dahmer had beaten him, but had no memory of it. Dahmer identified this as what caused him to begin killing again in an interview after his incarceration. Dahmer in order to get rid of the corpse, placed the corpse in a suitcase and brought it back to his grandmother’s house where he cut it up.

Dahmer had a ritual that would include going to a nightclub, drink, watch the strip tease to pick up potential victims. If he was unable to find a victim at the nightclubs he would move on to Bath Clubs; which was a chain gay bathouses; meet someone an offer them money to go back to his place. While at his place Dahmer would have a few drinks with the victim and place a sleeping mixture in the victim’s drink. After the victim fell asleep he would strangle them. Dahmer had said that his motivation had been to create a sexual slave and be in ‘total control’. His motivation had not been to kill his victims but to create ‘living zombies.’ Dahmer would experiment on his victims to create this vision by drilling a hole in his victim’s head and pouring muriatic acid.

Dahmer had raped, murdered and dismembered 17 boys and men between the years of 1978 and 1991. His victims included Steven Mark Hicks (1978), Steven Tuomi (1987), James Doxtator (1988), Richard Guerrero (1988), Anthony Sears (1989), Raymond Smith (1990), Edward Smith (1990), Ernest Miller (1990), David Thomas (1990), Curtis Straughter (1991), Errol Lindsey (1991), Anthony Hughes (1991), Konerak Sinthasomphone (1991), Mark Turner (1991), Jeremiah Weinberger (1991), Oliver Lacy (1991) and Joseph Bradehoft (1991). His victims were described in an interview as ‘nobodies’, indicating that if they were to go missing, no one would notice. His victims were a majority minorities and/or homosexual, despite these being his victims he denied it being a racial or sexual preference.

To get Dahmer in the mood they would watch the movie Exorcist 3, which also became part of his ritual. The Cannibalism of his victims started out first as curiosity, but soon became part of the compulsion he experienced. He described cannibalism as “a way to make me feel that they were a part of me.” He often would photograph his victims to remember what they looked like and had intentions to create an altar that would hold 10 different skulls and skeletons of the victims. Dahmer had stated that he would use this alter as a place to think and it would be a memorial to them. Despite his victims not being a racial or sexual preference, he performed his victims without tattoos. Dahmer would not eat flesh that had tattoos because the ink used would give the meat a bad taste.

Captured and Charged:

Jeffrey Dahmer had attempted to murder Tracy Edwards on July 22, 1991 after bribing him to come back to his apartment to take naked photos. Once at his apartment Dahmer had tried to handcuff and threaten Edwards, but Edwards remained calm and managed to punch Dahmer in the face and make a run for it. Edwards had made a run for the door,  found two police officers and proceeded to explain what had happened and ask if they had a key for the handcuffs. The police officers took Edwards back to the house to retrieve the keys and arrest Dahmer. The officers found a knife in Dahmer’s bedroom and in a drawer pictures of his victims and after further searching found multiple dismembered body parts throughout his apartment.

Dahmer was charged and found guilty of 15 murders and was ordered to serve 15 life sentences on February 15, 1992. Dahmer’s defense team tried to use an insanity plea but ultimately he was found sane and charged. He was not charged with the murder of Steven Tuomi because the murder was not believed to be proved beyond reasonable doubt, however in May 1992 another life sentence was added in the Ohio Court.

In an interview with Dahmer, Nancy Glass had pointed out that Dahmer wears glasses but during his trial was not wearing any. Dahmer explained that he did not wear his glasses during the trial because he did not want anyone to look at him and he did not want to see anyone in the courtroom. He said this helped him to disassociate from what was going on around him.

Death:

Jeffrey Dahmer was murdered by inmate Christopher Scarver on November 28, 1994 after being beaten to death with a metal bar. Scarver originally stated that ‘God made him’ kill Dahmer, later came out saying that Dahmer would taunt the other inmates and create limbs out of prison food. Scarver already convicted for murder had been sent to clean the bathrooms, Dahmer and another inmate with him. Scarver had gone to pick up a mop when he felt a poke on his back, but when he turned around all he saw was Dahmer and the other inmate laughing under their breath.

Later Scarver followed Dahmer to confront him about his cannibalism and the murders, Dahmer tried to escape, but Scarver crashed into Dahmer’s skull with a metal bar killing him. Scarver believed that the guards had left him alone with Dahmer intentionally knowing that he wanted to kill Dahmer. Dahmer had quoted earlier “If I was killed in prison it would be a blessing right now.”

Diagnostic Summary:

Despite trying to use the insanity plea during his trial no diagnosis would save him from ultimately his death. What was even more interesting to learn is that Dahmer experienced remorse and had admitted his faults in numerous interviews. As a licensed Social Worker I intend to use this section to explain a possible diagnosis for Jeffrey Dahmer based off of live interviews I have watched and using my DSM 5.

Dahmer in an Interview in 1993 he was asked if he ever experienced any feelings of revulsion towards the crimes/acts he was committing. Dahmer had responded “There were times, but the compulsive obsessions with uh, doing what I was doing overpowered the feelings of revulsion.” Dahmer had been experiencing urges to perform cannibalism and the dark, twisted and unnatural crimes that he committed when he was 15 years old. These thoughts often consumed his time which led him to use alcohol to suppress the feelings and thoughts. Dahmer would constantly experience the need to kill and would describe it as addictive. The only way for Dahmer to relieve himself of this need or ‘obsession’ was to kill or ‘act on the compulsion.’

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of obsessions and/or compulsions; Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, urges or images that are experienced as intrusive and unwanted whereas Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that an individual feels driven to perform in response to an obsession (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Illness, 2017).

Dahmer had expressed remorse towards his actions and even had gone on interviews so that people could understand what was happening in his mind. Dahmer had intrusive thoughts related to cannibalism and sex. His thoughts had begun to become so strong that as he mentioned numerous times the only way to ‘satisfy the urge was to act on it.’ Even then, Dahmer’s inability to feel revulsion was because of that feeling towards “satisfaction” after acting on his intrusive thought. Dahmer had even admitted that it was better for him to be behind bars because he knew that as long as he was alive, he would be experiencing these thoughts and having that compulsion to act on them. Dahmer reported that his compulsions became so strong that this is what caused him to eat his victims heart. What started out as curiosity added to his compulsions. Dahmer had attempted to ignore and suppress these thoughts for years which lead to alcohol use and even then the thoughts were still there. Many suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder use alcohol to ‘self-medicate’ which can quickly turn to alcoholism if left unchecked (Smith, 2019). Dahmer’s use of alcohol and OCD go hand-in-hand with each other as he was looking for another way out that did not resort to giving in.

As many would classify Dahmer as Antisocial (aka psychopath or sociopath) the biggest differentiation in my opinion as a License Social Worker is his display of empathy. Now this is not an excuse for Dahmer’s behavior, nor does it make the crimes he committed okay. However, this is just another explanation as to why Dahmer did what he did. To bring the point back up about in prison making limbs out of food and taunting the inmates, well he did say that if he was to die in prison that would be a blessing right?
