IBTrav Interview

Travis Falligant aka IBTrav is a graphic artist and illustrator who creates several fantastic projects including Horror Babies (which we are OBSESSED with!). Just by looking at some of his work you can tell that he loves incorporating bright colors in his graphic illustrations. Travis has always had a passion for creating art, and has now been working as an artist professionally for 17 years. “I was always interested in being creative and creating art.”

We had the pleasure of picking his brain through this interview!

CoM: I discovered you through your Horror Babies series. I love it! What was your inspiration from it? What made you decide to make a children’s coloring book? Children themselves can bring a creepy factor to horror.

Thanks so much! I’m so glad the “Babies” are gaining interest from people, I enjoy this series. I was obviously inspired by The Muppet Babies (toddler versions of known characters). Baby versions of horror icons are NOTHING NEW but I wanted to do my own take on it.

CoM: What is your favorite piece you’ve created, and how long did it take?

Gah! I really don’t think I can answer that! I find value in each piece that I do! I guess right now it would be an illustration I did using an old YM magazine photo of a young Alex Winter from the 80’s. Not sure if it’s a fave, because I love the reference photo I found or if I like the way I interpreted it. As far as how long it took to do, I’m going to guesstimate a few hours.

CoM: What are your top five horror icons?

This changes, but ALWAYS at the top of my list is Chucky for sure, so:

  1. Chucky
  2. Jason
  3. Freddy
  4. Michael Myers
  5. Leatherface

(Trav’s special inclusion: Elvira and The Creeper from Jeepers Creepers)

CoM: What would you say is your favorite decade of horror?

Easily the 80’s. When I was growing up as a teen, it was the 90’s and a (I felt) wasteland of terrible Stephen King adaptations always hitting the theater or Wes Craven failed features. Sure there was Dr. Giggles and The Crow, but not until 1996 with Scream was there REALLY any good horror in the 90’s. (CoM: I’m also guilty of watching my share of poor Stephen King adaptations)

CoM: Artists, writers, content creators… everyone feels like they hit a “block” at times. When you’re feeling this way what do you do to help find inspiration?

I try to step away and avoid pushing myself to create when “the well is dry”. I go to get inspired by looking on the internet at what other artists are creating, or watching movies I’ve seen 1000 times before! Sometimes you need to step away and not force creativity. It’ll find its way back home eventually.

CoM: What are some of your inspirations in general?

Well definitely film first and foremost. I am inspired by music, pop culture, camp, drag queens, of COURSE horror. I’m also inspired by the AMAZING AMOUNT of creative individuals out there! The internet is a fabulous way to be exposed to artists all over the world that are sharing their work with so many of us. AMAZING talent out there.

CoM: If you were in the universe of a cabin in the woods type slasher movie what type of a character would you be? Would you relate to one of the classic stereotypes (i.e. the jock, the nerd, etc.)… or would you want to be the villain?

I think the appeal to slasher films like Friday the 13th is that you sympathize with the villain a bit. At this point in my life I feel as though I am a survivor (like a final girl), as I have overcome personal trauma & more to be here today. BUT on the flipside, I am also relating more to the villain as a lot of the general public annoys the hell out of me (CoM: we feel that). So, I relate to the final girl and the villain.

CoM: In your opinion, what is the most underrated horror movie?

I always go back to Fright Night. I think that the film is a LOVE LETTER to horror fans and also bridges the gap between “old school” and “new school”. Tom Holland took the “vampire tropes” and updated them for modern audiences in the 80’s and I just love that film. It plays so well from the beginning to end and fires on all cylinders. It still is a beloved film and I don’t know if it qualifies as “underrated”, but I feel as though it doesn’t get mainstream love as much as it should. The Lost Boys is the “sexier” choice for best 80’s vampire film, but Fright Night is substance over style in my book.

CoM: What is your least favorite subgenre of horror?

Easily zombies. I’m oooover zombies and have been for two decades now. Ghosts or ghost girls second for sure.

CoM: I’ve seen some of your comic styled work, would you ever want to make your own comic?

I have MAD RESPECT for comic artists! The amount of work that goes into character design, composition, etc and then creating panels after panels of art… there’s no way I have patience for that. So, I will continue to do a panel here and a panel there.

CoM: Do you find yourself gravitating to any certain colors more than others when creating a piece?

My fave color is orange, but I’ve noticed that I do use a lot of hot pink in my work! I think that comes from my love of camp, drag, and also expressing that “queer” side of myself. Growing up, you had to suppress it. Now I feel like I can let that part of who I am be celebrated, and I use it in my art.

CoM: What was one of the coolest fan art/ photo submissions/ or comments you’ve ever received?

Well I will say, I absolutely LOVE getting fan art, or kind comments. Those really motivate me to keep doing what I’m doing. It shows me people actually pay attention to the art I output. People send me photos of tattoos they got of my art, and I love that, or they turn my art into memes. Seeing my gifs show up on social media, used by people is always humbling! So to answer your question: I love ‘em ALL and can’t pick one.

CoM: What are some of your goals as an artist?

To be inspired. To pay tribute to those who inspired me through the years. A lot of the subject matter in my art revolves around an actor’s performance, a tribute to a director’s film that I love or a personality that inspires me. Film, TV, music was and still is my life. If I didn’t have pop culture I wouldn’t have a reason for living!

You will continue to see me create art based off of my inspirations of pop culture. If you see me post something, it has been done because I have love for the subject matter.
