Cait Devin is an indie rock/ alt pop musician based in New York. She’s absolutely killer at guitar, and super passionate about her craft.
“I write tunes and play guitar also. Alongside my acoustic stuff, (which, I just recorded an acoustic album called Cait Devin Unplugged!) I do some “shred collabs” – typically rock style guitar instrumentals. I’ve been singing all my life, and picked up an acoustic a bit later when I was 14. I am 18 now, and just started playing lead guitar around 2 and a half years ago.”
We got to know more about her through this interview, and also how she’s been dealing with life during the coronavirus.
CoM: How have you developed your current style?
I am kinda all over the board, but if I could describe my style in a nutshell it would be Avril Lavigne, crossed with Ed Sheeran, with lots of guitar solos and things. I used to do a lot of ballads and “bubblegum pop” as a kid doing talent shows growing up, but I feel deep down I’ve always had the rockier edge.
CoM: What are some of your inspirations? As a pop/ rock artist how would you describe finding inspirations for some of the edgier imagery or styles you incorporate.
I am one to love all genres of music. It really depends on the mood and what I’m feeling that influences my writing that given day. I would say, to other artists, try not to put yourself in a box and just go with what flows. As said previously, I am very influenced by Ed Sheeran and Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, and Tonight Alive. I even take inspiration from artists such as Chase Atlantic and Grimes.
CoM: The coronavirus has been hitting everyone pretty hard, but I’ve been seeing some of your live stream or stay-at-home performances. Tell me about organizing or getting involved with online events.
I have been organizing many online events, typically on Facebook live. I just find musicians who are up for streaming, help promote them on my page, ect. Supporting each other during these crazy times is so important!!
CoM: How has it been creating content during quarantine? Have you been working on any new projects?
I’ve been at home for about two years now, since I finished highschool both online, and early. So I guess nothing has changed for me at all when it comes to my usual grind and creative process. I just haven’t been able to play gigs, which I do miss. And yes! Several new projects are coming up that have been occupying my time. But for now, the big one I have coming up is secret!
CoM: I’m happy everyone is staying home and being safe, but I’m definitely having concert withdrawals. Shows can get so wild at times. What was one of the weirdest things you’ve seen at a show?
Well, I’ve had beer spilled on me plenty of times, I’ll say that much.
CoM: What would you say was your favorite show or the most memorable one you’ve performed at?
Any of my shows in Nashville hold a special place for me. It’s just magical.
CoM: I love how you’re always spreading love, and encouraging people to stay positive. Do you have any advice on how to keep positive?
These are hard times, so it’s super important to not be too hard on yourself. Lift others up in times of need and anger. I’ve always been one to drive myself a little crazy with work and music, but during quarantine I’m quickly learning that self care absolutely comes first. It helps to keep a clear head.
CoM: At Church of Mena we love all things horror and abnormal. What would you say is your favorite type of a horror monster?
I love any mystical creature from Harry Potter, does that count? Does Voldemort count? LOL.
CoM: If you could be any mythological creature, what would you be? Why?
I would be a witch, hence Hogwarts. (CoM: Gotta love witches!)
CoM: A lot of times with our brand the topic of the paranormal pops up. Do you personally believe in ghosts?
I believe in all possibilities, because I feel like what is beyond our world as humans is too great and vast to even fathom.
CoM: What artists or bands do you listen to the most?
I’m a guitar geek, so Andy James, Angel Vivaldi, Jason Richardson, Steve Vai, ect ect.. as far as vocalists go, I’ve been really into Halsey lately. I think she’s got a cool vibe. AND GRIMES!!
CoM: If there’s one thing you’d like viewers to know about you or your craft what would that be?
That I’m a potato at heart.
