The Legend:
The Bunny Man is an urban legend that obtained its name after two odd encounters in Fairfax County Virginia in 1970. The encounters have also spread out to Washington DC. The urban legend had multiple takes on who and what the Bunny Man was. The most popular version of the legend was written in the 1990s, by a writer who goes by the name Timothy C. Forbes. The legend goes as followed;
In 1904 deep in the woods that divided the town of Clifton from Fairfax Station, there was an asylum for the insane. At one point the asylum closed and the residents were shoved on a bus with the destination of Lorton Prison. On the way to the prison, the bus swerved and crashed killing almost everyone on board. Many of the passengers escaped and were found except for two. Douglas Grifon who was admitted to the asylum after killing his family on Easter Sunday with an axe and Marcus Wallster.
While searching for him the authorities had found a trail of half-eaten, gutted bunnies with many of the carcasses hanging from what was then called Fairfax Station Bridge. Marcus was eventually found dead by Fairfax Station Bridge (now known as Bunny Man Bridge), but no one cared how or why he died, just that he no longer was someone to be worried about. On his body was a makeshift hammer/knife tool. Marcus had been named the Bunny Man originally until the search for Douglas had consisted of finding the carcasses of dead, half-eaten bunnies.
3 months had passed (now 1905) and the police had already given up their search assuming that the Bunny Man was dead or had left town. It was in October that the dead bunnies started to reappear and cause fear amongst the town members. Halloween night came and many of the town kids had gone to the Bridge to drink. Once midnight came and many of the kids had left except for 3 who stayed behind.
As midnight came so did a bright light from the bridge and in less than a few seconds all of the kids were dead. The throats of the kids had been slashed with the tool that was found on Marcus when his body was found. The kids not only had their throats slashed, but they had been gutted as well and hung than men on one end of the bridge with a rope around their neck and the women on the other end of the bridge.
The Facts:
Some legends say that the Bunny Man was hit by a train as he was about to be caught. It was said that as he was hit by the train he was heard laughing. However, these are all just myths because the earliest encounter of the Bunny Man was in 1970 and he was described to be a male in his mid-20s and wearing a bunny costume.
The Bunny Man legend had also been researched extensively by the Fairfax County Public Library Historian Activist Brian A. Conley. In his research, Conley found some factors that would make the story written by Forbes, just that: a story.
Conley found that Lorton Prison, where the inmates were going to be transferred in 1903 was not opened until 1916. He also found that there was no record of a Douglas Grifon and that the “old Clifton Library” never existed.
So what did occur?
The Origin:
Two cases had been reported in 1970 in Fairfax County Virginia, the first being on October 19, 1970. It was evening time and US air force academy cadet Robert Bennett and his fiance had been visiting family. It was around midnight and the couple had returned from a football game where they parked their car in the field on Guinea Road. The couple reported visiting an “uncle who lived across the street from where the car was parked.” As the couple sat in their car they noticed movement outside and all of a sudden the passenger window was smashed and there was a ‘white figure’ standing near the broken window. The man screamed, “YOU’RE ON PRIVATE PROPERTY AND I HAVE YOUR TAG NUMBER”.
The second incident occurred within 2 weeks on October 29, 1970, to construction security guard Paul Phillips. Phillips reported he approached a man that was standing on the porch of a home that had yet to be furnished on Guinea Road. The mysterious man was reported by Phillips to be about 20 and in a bunny costume. Phillips reported the man had chopped at the porch post with an axe and said “You are trespassing. If you come any closer, I will chop your head off.”
The Fairfax County Police had investigated both incidents that occurred but their search came to a dead-end and the cases were both closed. That did not stop reports that occurred within the weeks following stating that they have seen the “bunny man”. The “Bunny Man” was reported in the Washington Post to have eaten a man’s runaway cat.
To further confirm the sightings of the Bunny Man in 1970 Brian Conley found the now-married couple that had the hatchet thrown at them. The couple was reluctant about telling their story but still shared details and confirmed the incident occurred.
The Bunny Man has yet to be caught to this day and what motivated him to terrorize the town is still unclear.
