Christy Aldridge Interview

Christy Aldridge is a horror based writer from the “deep, deep south” We discovered her through her works, and set up this interview to learn more about her and her craft!

CoM: Tell me about your art!

I mostly write horror, but I’ve dabbled in poetry as well. I also (occasionally) post Youtube videos reviewing old movies or talking about writing and horror. I’ve always loved the horror genre, ever since I was a kid. Horror movies were the most watched genre in my house, so it seemed only fitting that it was the genre I leaned toward when I began writing. Mostly because horror is found in so many genres to begin with. I chose to start writing it though when I was around fourteen, so twelve years now. It’s almost hard to believe.

CoM: What are some inspirations for your works?

Life. When dealing with the dark, personal experience has helped. I think that’s why I’m drawn to horror that deals with grief and tragedy as opposed to senseless kills and gore. I’ve always found that life has enough horrors of its own, whether it’s an emotion or action. It was easy to draw off that and create content.

CoM: How long did it take you to write Kill, My Darlings? What was the biggest challenge when writing it?

A few years actually. But only because I compiled short stories that I had written over the years and then sat down to write some specifically for the book. Probably the biggest challenge was deciding what needed to be there and what didn’t. Also, the order. But I left most of it up to chance and outside opinions. I’ve always trusted the people that I show my work to (which is like one person, actually!) and the order and content inside ended up working out perfectly.

CoM: Every creator is so critical with their work. I know I personally make edit after edit of my own work. When you were writing and putting your books together how did you know when you were officially done with it? How did that feel?

I am the same way! Honestly, there just comes a point where you ask yourself if you told the story to the best of your abilities. I also have the best critical reader for my work. He always gives me completely honest advice and criticism, and at some point, says that the story is done in his opinion. I usually give it another glance over at that point and usually agree. Mostly because I’m tired of rereading it! It always feels amazing though. To finally be done with something you’ve spent so much time with, it’s nice to see it finished.

CoM: What are some of your favorite authors?

Oh geez, we could be here all day. (CoM: LOL we know, sooo many great writers!) But I’ll try to make this list as small as possible. Obviously, Stephen King, which is usually a staple for any horror writer, along with Clive Barker. However, some of my favorite authors include Anthony Creane, or Terrorfiction, Edward Lorn, Mae Maccullam, Hailey Piper, Kealan Patrick Burke, John Huber, and so many others. I also love the dark fantasy of Neil Gaiman, though I’ve only recently begun to read his work. However, one of my favorite guilty pleasures is anything Sandra Brown wrote. I devour her books every single time.

CoM: What’s your favorite mythological creature?

Probably mermaids. I think they’re so beautiful and so mysterious. They can be described as gruesome or gorgeous, and that means there is also so much room to play with them creatively.

CoM: What first got you into the horror genre?

I just grew up with it. Horror was a big staple in my household. I had watched most of the King movies before I ever picked up one of his books. I was always drawn into it emotionally, for the most part. People are quick to talk about how different genres make you think and feel, but they often leave out horror. If anything, horror has always made me feel so many different things and I think that’s what draws me in.

CoM: What is your all time favorite horror novel?

Pet Sematary. The grief, the pain, the brutality, it has everything I love in a book. I cried and slammed the book closed while reading it. I was both scared and in pain. King really put me there and I’ve never forgotten it. (CoM: It is a fantastic story)

CoM: How many published works do you currently have? Are you more attached to one over the others?

Seven! It’s sort of hard for me to believe that. I had to count them up and hadn’t realized I had published that many so far! I think most people know that ‘Kill, My Darlings’, my short story collection, is a favorite of mine, but the truth is, I’ve always been more emotionally invested in my novel, ‘Rogues’. It was deeply personal and at times, so difficult to write. The characters stay with me to this day.

CoM: A lot of writers I talk to battle occasionally “writer’s block” when you get like this, what do you do to find inspiration? Do you have any advice for people who feel stuck?

I don’t personally believe in writer’s block. For me, it’s always been procrastination or a lack of inspiration. My best piece of advice is to step away. I know you want to write. I know you want to get the words out, but step away. Go for a walk. Read a book. Binge watch Lucifer like I do! Anything that gives your brain a break and opens your eyes to a new perspective.

CoM: Do you have a specific time of day or place you like to write in that makes you feel the most creative?

I’m always home, so I try to give myself a schedule. Wake up, work out, write, go about my day. Treating it like a job, which it is, really helps. It puts the work in perspective.

CoM: Who do you think is the scariest horror icon?

Regan. Her character proved that it didn’t matter who you were, how old, gender, nothing, evil could take over anyone. And, she is just scary, period. It’s why she’s also one of my favorite horror icons.

CoM: How often do you write?

I try to write everyday. It goes back to that job aspect. Writing every day because it’s my job helps me stay focused, but I also believe writing is like a muscle. You have to work at it to keep it strong, and not writing can make it weaken. So trying to stay consistent is key.

CoM: What are some of your goals from the future? Are you currently working on any projects we should be looking out for?

My goals are just to keep doing what I’m doing. Creating horror content. This is what I love and I get to do it every day. But I’m always working on projects. I have a book I’ll be publishing before the end of this year called ‘Seth’ and I’m so excited about it. It deals with religion and cult mindsets. Right now, I’m working on a different sort of novel though. One that feels very ‘me’. It deals with mosquitos and vampires and the deep south, things I have superior knowledge in. So definitely keep an eye out for those!

CoM: Is there anything you’d want everyone to know about you?

I’m just a weird chick that enjoys dabbling in some dark and twisted things. I swear I’m not too weird though!
